because people have the right to choose how they want to be identified. What does that have to do with whether they are illegal or not? how is ethnic identity a matter of legality of the person's immigration status in the United States. I am sure the native people of Mexico who currently live in Mexico also hate the term.

It's a racist generalization of people who were colonized by the imperialistic Spanish and now their culture is dying because the Spanish of the time have diluted the heritage of the native people of Latin and South America.
