Researching Australian Families going back to Europe?

How would I best go about doing this? I have heard about the DNA testing but how accurate is it and how detailed would it get you?

Also when a website says something like lands were granted for Battle of Hastings or family seated, what does this mean?

For Australian traceability at least 1 branch is from non-convict, but rather a soldier from the day. Would this throw a spanner in the works?

Here are some handy web sites that may help you. You might also search for "Ship Manifest" in yahoo. You may have to cut the web sites I posted down, to the root, if they don't work.
