People always want to blame the teachers these days. If the teacher said she sent notes home, she most likely has. As a teacher I always kept copies. Perhaps you should ask her to keep copies or better yet, email you directly.
I would get tutoring for your son. But, the best thing I can recommend is that you support the teacher. If she says he is misbehaving take away his video games, tv privileges, etc, until you get word from her that he has improved. If he is not doing his homework take away privileges until he does.
When I taught I had an awful student and I asked him mom to not let him go to open gym to play b-ball until I called her back and said he was better. He BEGGED me after 2 days to call and promised he would turn everything in on time, study, behave, etc.......and he did.
Good luck. This is a key time as your son prepares for Middle School -- get him on the right track now.

It could be that your child has a learning disability you might not be aware of. You should have him tested for cognitive skills.
He could have problems with Visualization, Spatial Orientation, Visual Memory, Visual Tracking, Mental Rotations and Perspective Coordination. My son did and we did not find out till 3rd grade. He is in the 6th grade now and is doing better. You might want to talk to your school about the Individual Education Program (I.E.P.) It falls under the No Child Left Behind Act. Have his eyes checked, he may need reading glasses. If you live in the San Francisco Bay Area visit UC Berkeley Optometry. They will do an eye exam and a cognitive test. Any major university can also do this also. If he has these problems his self-esteem will prevent him from bring you notes to show he is behind. He will lack confidence in his abilities regarding school work. This is no laughing matter and if you don’t find out why he is failing it will only snowball.

He is at fault. Don't bury your head in the sand and blame anyone but him. What you need to do is visit his classroom everyday and ask his teacher(s) if there is work to be done or any notes you need to see. Don't trust him to do this because obviously he isn't doing it. Take away his privileges until he gets his act together and brings his grades up. It's harsh sounding, yes, but if you don't grab the reins now, it's only going to get harder later on, both for you and for him. Good luck!

First check to see WHY he is failing; is it because he's not getting enough instruction? Is there some specific subject that he needs help in? More extreme cases may include learning disorders. My son was also having problems in school. (4th grade) I found out that my son is ADHD with learning disorders. Once that was determined, I got him all types of support, although I had to fight for everything. Now he's doing a lot better.

Ask him what's wrong. My 7 year old was failing the first grade because the other kids were beating up on him and he was afraid to make good grades. If he made better grades then the bullies they would punch him and steal his lunch. He told me when I asked him so I had a talk with some parents and things got better.

If it's just a matter of focus and discipline, not a learning disability or medical issue, try to interest him in the martial arts. You wouldn't believe the changes I've seen in some kids over the years... (as an added benefit, he'll learn some self-defense)

make sure it isnt dyslexia or adhd, then find out how attentive the school is teaching the kids. Also if its a public school, i dont blame him. Also if he isnt very poplular or an outcast, he is probably depressed. assure him that the kids he knows now wont mean anything to him in the future, and if he does his work well he might be the boss of them one day. =)

Don't leave the school work all up to one person with 28 (on national average) other kids to attend to. Your child is bound to get lost in the shuffle and it is YOUR job to pick up the slack!
Educate your own child and allow the teacher to test and guide their ability.

this happened to my cousin.she took her son with her to talk to teacher. she found out he was not doing his homework.once he got caught his grades improved-he is now on A honor role, ready to go to college-wants to be a doc. , it could be his fault. this is the thing i would do ,cause i love my daughter dearly, i do realize that you cannot trust them, they will get into trouble, that`s why you have to keep a close check on things. i`ve seen too many parents defend their childern blindly. please check it out.
