I would go with a bigger breed,
You didn't mention what the handicap was which would help a great deal.

Are they able to feed it? This would help in their bond.

All time favorites are Labradors-German Shepards and often Collies but there are really many to choose from. Even the mutt.

Actually a good mutt the best. Ever see "Lady and the Tramp"? People have been lead to believe pure-breeds are something to get with papers and being more expensive. But, if people study, pure-breeds are more prone to problems. Most mutts do well and are intelligent. Plus, a lot of times a mutt is free. Any of the Breeds mentioned are a good choice only in mutt form. Something that looks like it a Border Collie, German Shepherd, etc. You be surprised what you can find for little or no money and you not have to pay to register it with AKC etc. just to make them easy money. I have had both, registered (raised and sold them) and mutts (give away). But, for the money you will never beat a good mutt. I would have the dog "fixed" and a female may be better, in my opinion.

Make sure you know the temperment of the dog before you get it. The best way to do this is to check out the breeders in your area. Go to the dog trainers, they know who would have a dog with the temperment you are looking for. Also, your local 4H dog project is a great resource for information about dog breeds. Sometimes, the kids train helper dogs as their project. The 4H would be a great place to locate the right dog.

Goldens and labs are commonly trained for disabled people, but I've seen mutts used in the same capacity.

dogs have different personalitys some of the behavoirs depend on breed. I would go with a mixed breed because full breeds tend to be high strung.
