It's a respect thing. This is probably someone you shared a loving relationship with before you decided to end it. You'll never go back to being "just friends" they will always care for you even if it isn't at the girlfriend boyfriend level. So he is gentle with you because he cares.

I know it is confusing right now. But I went through the same thing with my ex. He just feels regret or guilt. It does not mean he wants to be with you and it does not mean you should try to get back together. Please, trust me on this. Sometimes men have remorse - some guilt... but it is really normal that he would feel this way now. But try not to read into it that it is anything more.
