While it would have been the human, kind thing to do to give you a grace period so you can be there for your brother, in the real world that just doesn't happen. Unfortunately they need a position filled and operate on their own schedule, not yours/
I will say this. You absolutely made the correct decision. Look a year or two down the road, after, sadly, your brother passes. I don't think it's likely you'll be wishing you'd taken that job instead of being there for your brother at the end. Instead you would probably regret for the rest of your life having chosen a job over your brother. Besides jobs come and go. How do you know this job you might have put ahead of your brother would last anyway.
All the best to you. I lost my baby brother to pancreatic cancer. He was only 26 years old. My peace to this day is that I did everything in my power to help him. That is what you need to remember.

Call the person who gave you the job in the first place and explain the situation they might just come round but you have to look at it from their point of view they cannot employ someone who cannot be for personal reasons reliable, if your brother hasnt got long to live then you are going to have to have time off work and the employer can see this happening so really they are doing you a favour because right now you need to be with your family

Me, personally, would have held your job open until whenever you decided you can come in! We just lost my father-in-law, back in April of this year, to non-Hodgkin's lymphoma of the brain. He battled it for 5 years and sadly lost when the cancer moved to an in-operable part of his brain.
Should they have held your job? I would have to sadly say...no. This was supposed to be your first day, even though you called and they said "family first", they are only looking at your future call outs for the same reason.
Believe me, that doesn't mean I agree with it!!!! I just wanted to give you an honest answer. You most certainly did the right thing in being with your brother!! Try not to worry about this job! You'll find another one. You won't find another brother! So don't beat yourself up over it or dwell on it. There are plenty of jobs out there.
Good luck to you; your brother; and your entire family!! I will be thinking of you all and hope for the best. It's all anyone can ever do in times like this!!

How harsh and insensitive of this new employer....thats awful, as if you haven;t got enough to worry about right now! If this is a large company, have you tried ringing a head office and explaining this situation to them...I cannot believe they are such assholes...I think one positive thought to all this is that you have had a lucky escape, if they can react the way they have at a time like this then imagine how rotten they must be to work for. You need to be with your family during this time, my thoughts are with you all and your brother....xx

Are there the different community apprenticeships? perhaps he can sign in with them in some variety of contract the place he's basically finding for journey. He could, of direction, could show them his understanding. If he's solid, he could have the skill to paintings out some variety of handle them. If no longer community, possibly a quick stent the place the jobs are?? those issues ensue, the place somebody in instruction get's the rug pulled out from decrease than them. What he has to do is hit upon a niche the place he would gets a commission much less for a quick time. he will use that factor to community his way right into a typical pastime.

Brother definitely.
I hope you explained the situation to the company you was going for the job with. If you have your employer should have been more simperfectic to you and possibly hold your job but bare in mind they are a company and it might not be possible for them to do that forever.

You did the right thing in being with your brother. You can always find another job but you cant get another brother. If the company were that small minded they wouldnt hold the job for you then stuff them - they werent worth working for anyway. The last moments with your brother are crucial and will remain with you for life - be there for him and be strong. x

That's very mean, but if there was no contract signed then they didn't have to hold it for you, maybe the position was urgent. I would write them a well thought out letter explaining your distaste at their action, that would at least maybe make you feel better and possibly give them a guilt-trip too, though it probably won't get you a job there while that manager is in charge!

my heart goes out to you it really does. Did the employer know of this situation? but yes i sympathise with you and it would of been a good gesture of the employer to keep the job open unfortunately the world does not always operate how we would like. You take care

family comes first and if that employer couldn't see that then they lost a good employee, just get a job somewhere else but in the mean time enjoy the time you have left with your brother
