I'm assuming you do not do crunches regularly or you have not done so many before. It's difficult to strain your stomach doing crunches - they 've probably been just slightly overworked. Ideally, give crunches a break (day or 2) and you'll maximise the benefit of what you did this morning. Speaking from personal experience, you can condition to a stage where stomach exercises become almost aerobic, that is high repetitions (lots) daily.

Depends on the hurt. If it is in your abs than you are just feeling the "burn" of the exercise which means it's working. It should not hurt anywhere in your back - that would mean you did them incorrectly. Also, it is very important to stretch after any exercise. Once you are done with your crunches you should also do some lower back exercises (lie face down, hands under chin and lift the upper body up until you feel a slight pull in your back, hold for 3 counts and lower - repeat 12-15 times). To stretch your abs lay face down hands under your shoulders and press yourself up until arms are almost, but not completely, straight while leaning the chest forward - you should be able to feel this stretch in your abdominals.

It sounds like you didn't warm up enough. A good warm up of all parts of your body then you should get no pains. It is also possible that if you haven't done these in a while you started with too many.

Always do lots of stretching before any hard work on your body.
And don't forget to cool down at the end with similar stretching out.

At least the aching is evidence you are hitting the right spot!

It could be the muscles you worked doing the crunches haven't been used in a while and are sore.

It's hurting because it's working...."No pain, no gain"...it means that you are effectively doing the exercises and the muscles in turn are responding by feeling sore....it's when it doesn't hurt that you should worry because then you aren't doing your exercises right.....

I would say you did too many crunches. No pain no gain is a myth.

Overworked muscles create tannic acid which makes you sore.
