I got the idea for this question from watching a local political debate... Your guest list for a dinner party should conform to the following (and can include non-living people from the past)

2 religious figures
2 scientists
2 political figures
2 criminals
2 celebrities (e.g. writers, actors, composers, etc.)

So who would make your list?
And why?

Interesting question. I would pick the following:

Religious = Jesus & Buddah (to find out what they really believe and what they think of today's world)
Scientists = Einstein & Stephen Hawking (to compare cosmologies)
Political Figures = Thomas Jefferson & Abraham Lincoln (both were such pivotal figures)
Criminals = Al Capone & Hitler (to find out what they were really all about)
Celebrities = Shakespeare & George Bernard Shaw (So I won't have to carry the conversation by myself)

I don't know how to tell the difference between the Political figures, Criminals and Celebrities, even some of the Religious figures and Scientists would also be hard to determine.

Maybe I could just invite 6 or 4 or 2 instead of 10?

Peace

2 religious figures - Pope Gregore and and Herod.

Pope Gregore - I'd "in-quiz" him on the Christian ramifications of his commissioning The Malleus Maleficarum (The Witch Hammer) which caused unthinkable death and destruction - particularly against women.

Herod - Did he in fact know a Jesus and was he instrumental in Pontius Pilot's sentence of death?

2 scientists - Albert Einstein and Carl Jung.

I'd love to sit down with both of them and discuss the human element of parapsychology.

2 political figures - Pierre Trudeau and John Kennedy.

I'd ask them what they thought of the political climate of the world today and what they would do if they were faced with similar circumstances.

2 criminals - The KKK members who bombed the 16th Street Baptist Church in Birmingham, and Paul Burnardo.

I'd ask them why they have so little regard for human life.

2 celebrities - Billy Wilder and Billy Holiday.

Billy Wilder - I'd ask him about the difficulty he had in learning the English language after he arrived in the U.S. And along the same lines, I'd ask him how he was able to write such sparkling scripts like "Some Like It Hot" given that English was his second language.

Billy Holiday - What created the genesis of back-singing? And if she had to do it all over again, would she find some other means of dealing with her psychological pain and not become an addict.

Fact is, I'd love to have a dinner party with all of these guests in attendance. It would make for some lively entertainment let alone for some insightful intellectual jousting.

Religious: Jesus & Paul ... Jesus is a given for a Christian, just as Mohammed would be for a Muslim, or Moses for a Jew. As for Paul, I'd like to ask him what he meant in a few of the letters he wrote.

Science: Adam & Jamie from "Mythbusters." They're hilarious.

Political: Bill Clinton & George Washington. Clinton is the outstanding political figure of our times, and I've always admired Washington.

Criminals: No poisoners invited to dinner! Jack the Ripper & Lee Harvey Oswald. I'd just like to know who Jack the Ripper was, and I'd like to kick the tar out of Oswald (after he confirms that he acted alone).

Celebrities: Charisma Carpenter & Jewel Staite. I'm male and I'm a Joss Whedon fan.

Buddha and Pope John Paul because they were men of peace and yet on the opposite sides of the coin. It would be interesting to see how they would react to each other's ideas.

Carl Sagan and Stephen Hawking because they are two men I admire in science and I would love to see how each other thought about their work and ideas.

Jimmy Carter and G. W. Bush because in my mind Jimmy Carter is a white knight and GW is a black knight. I would love for Jimmy to debate Bush on humanity.

Al Capone and Kenneth Lay because of their Bizarro World Robin Hood modus operandus.

Douglas Adams and John Cleese for entertainment purposes and also for some stimulating conversation, as both have definite ideas about life and the world that are not only humorous, but spot on.

Jesus and God......surely between the two of them they could get the story straight.

Darwin and Jonas Salk.......Darwin to set the first two straight. Viruses fascinate me,as do methods of prevention, so Salk's a logical choice.

Jimmy Carter.....Habitat for Humanity, need I say more. Martin Luther King, Jr. Not a politician per se, but extraordinarily valuable in the civil rights movement.

D.B. Sweeny....where did the money go, what really happened when he jumped from that plane? Ted Bundy....Serial killers fascinate me,and he is one of the most interesting.

David Duchovny.....is he really as hot as he in on my avatar? Anthony Hopkins....I had the good fortune to meet him once. I would like to meet up with him again.
