I am seven-teen years old and I am a junior. I am going to be taking classes in a community college along with high school classes and I was wondering what classes should I take? Should I get my general subjects out of the way? Help?

Why don't you meet with your school counselor who probably has a psychology/psychiatry degree and can give you the best answer. Your education is too important to let yahoo answers make such a critical decision for you. You should be considering taking college prep classes and any sociology or psychology classes, human relations etc

I wouldnt go to a community college as others are suggesting, unless you really have to. Community College wont be blowing away the Admissions folks at Med Schools like a presigous 4 year University would. You'll have to be premed in college, which tends to have a lot of nasty science classes. Biochem is one of the worst, usually. They will be able to point you in the right direction at college as to the classes you are required to take to be considered at a Med School. During med school you will get to chose a specialty, and that is when you could choose to become a Psychiatrist, if you still wanted to go that way at that point. Its a lot of work, a lot of study, and a lot of $$ for all the degrees, so be prepared.

It is always best to take general subjects at a Jr college first. This helps you get a feel for college life and also gets those generals, which are usually cheaper at a Jr college, out of the way. Once you get those out of the way, when you go to a 4 year university, you can get right into the most important classes to help you in your chosen career field. Good Luck!

Take humanities classes and Introduction to Psychology if your highschool offers one. Try to get the required general classes out of the way at the community college because that will be cheaper. Then once you enroll at a university you can take classes specific to the field of psychology, such as Abnormal Psychology, History and Theories in Psychology, and Developmental Psychology from higher quality professors. Any class that teaches you how humans operate, even indirectly, as in literature, would be beneficial. Good luck.

At a Community college, work on the core base classes. Contact the college you want to attend and ask for a catalog. The catalog shows the classes for any degree and the years you will be taking them.

good luck on your career choice!

You will have to go to medical school. You can't major as a psychiatrist. So, that being said, you will need to take a lot of science (biology, chem, etc) as well as math.

Yopu do not need to be a medical doctor to be a Psychologist. Perhaps that is what you really mean. Or are you eager to write prescriptions for patients for psychoactive drugs, rather than use talk therapy?

Psychiatry requires med school - they are real doctors who get off the path somewhere.
