Aside from the size of your apt. I don't see more problems of them learning about each other. NOT just the kittens; He/She has to get used to YOU as well. I took in two cats to find them homes, but my Stimpy hurried me along, because SHE is the Queen at our house. The adantage you have, obviously is the relative age of you kitten. All the rest is bridges; worry about them when you get to them.

Advantages:
1) they can play with each other when you are not around, cats love company and this way they will feel less lonely
2) they will pay much more attention to each other than to your curtains or sofas
3) the money you spend in food and litter with 2 cats is almost the same you spend with only one.
Disadvantages:
1) if there is already a cat in the house you will have to be aware during the first days to avoid conflicts with the arrival of the 2nd (this may or may not happen, some cats just get along naturally, like people..).

Getting a second kitten is a huge advantage. They will ultimately become best buddies! And of course, it's twice the fun for you. Even a small apartment is acceptable - cats don't need *that* much space.
Disadvantages: More litter to clean; more medical bills; more food bills. I don't view extra toys as a disadvantage.
Some comments on others' suggestions:
First, I hear pros & cons of two of the same sex vs. one of each all over the place, even with experienced breeders. My personal opinion is that it *makes no difference* as long as both are altered. We've had two male together, a bunch of females together and some of each. Two tend to bond, regardless of sex.
Next - for the "hissing and spitting". This may or may not happen depending on the age, and how long you've had the first. There will be a period of adjustment, but with young kittens, it shouldn't be long. If you decide to get a second kitten, try to do it when you will have time available to spend with both, such as a weekend.
Best of luck, and Enjoy! :-)

Talking from experice just got a second kitty.
Disadvantages-
Takes 2-3 days or more from them to get use to each other so there will be some hissying, spitting, slapping.
Twice the job of the litter pan.
Previous kitty gets jealious
Advantages-
Get to watch them run and play after they get use to one another.
They keep each other company when your not home.
They become best friends
Also it is a lot of work if you get a much younger kitty. I have a 8 week old kitten and someone gave me a 4 week old kitten because then mom didnt have enough milk and oh my god the work. My older kitten is to rough with her, but when she gets a couple more weeks on her he will be running from her lol. It really is fun it takes a lot of patients though. Because you have to go back through everything like litter training and breaking habits etc but it is all worth it in the end

Advantages out-weigh the disadvantages. The second kitten will provide companionship for the first, especially if they are left alone for a good part of the day while you're at work.
Disadvantage would be maybe a little tension when you first introduce the second one, but since you say your first is a kitten, the problems should be minimal. Kittens want playmates!

Pro: They will be best friends. They will play together and amuse you endlessly. They will never be lonely and you won't feel guilty about not being home. If you put a kitten with an older cat that bond won't form.
Con: My cat died at age 13 two months ago, and my other cat, who has been with him since they were 7 weeks old, is still devastated. He won't accept another cat or another kitten--only his friend will do. That's the biggest con, but the pros of having the two of them together for so many years outweighs that.

I had 4 cats when I lived in a small one bedroom aprtment. Loved it......most of the time they got along and the company was great. 2 cats should be just fine...............
Disadvantages.........more scooping in the litter box..........which for 2 cats it is better to have 2 litter boxes.........perhaps they won't always get along......
Make sure they both are or get fixed you will have less chances of having trouble with them getting along.....and if you have a female...it may be better to get a male for the second so she doesn't feel competition like she might if there were to be another female cat running around.
Twice the fun!!

Well I have female cat she was 8 when I got a male kitten. I had to separate them for a month when I was at work as the female cat hated the male cat. Cats are possesive and my female hated if I spent any time with the male kitten. Eventually she got use to him but I had to let her be the domanient one. Now they get along great, she even licks him and they play chase together. It will work out ok just let them get use to each other and it helps your female cat is a kitten. You may want to get a male cat.

everyone has made valid points...I reccommend getting a kitten of about 12 weeks as a friend.
As far as the small apartment goes, if you don't have a lot of space, the easiest way to create more kitty space, is to go vertical! Save up and get them a kitty gym, this creates more space for them to play in, and if you get it while they are young, they will both get so used to playing on it, the rest of your furniture will be safe!
I've got two indoor kitties, and another thing I like to do is to grow them kitty grass. Cats need grass to eat, and indoor kitties don't get that opportunity. You can go to the petstore and they've usually got fast growing grass in pots!
Have fun with your baby/babies!

There Will Be Alot Of Fighting.... like hissing and growling... I Am Doing The Same Thing... get another female kitten tho this may help out a bit. but introduce them slowly and it should be all Good!!!
Advantages
Two are better than one
they can play with eachother while you are not home.
if you get 2 females you wont have to worry about spraying.
Disadvantages
Some hissing fighting until they adapt to eachother
you will possibly need to get another litter box
get more kitty food than you usually do.
Hope This Helps

Two kittens are great. They play with each other when no one is home. This keeps the animal from being lonely. Disadvantages areif they don't like each other and like being the only cat. And you have to buy more cat things like more bowls. another litter box. more food. more toys. and another carrier.
