Great point about (not) being rude to someone who handles your food. Funny how some people don't understand that.
To answer your question though, I think some people just believe they are somehow "better" than waiters. I read somewhere that true character is the way we treat people who can do absolutely nothing for us. Very, very true. Waiters don't exactly fall into that category, but, they're pretty close.
To me, ANY job dealing with the public is pretty much an experience to hell and back, with waiters being right up there at the top. Some people don't feel good unless they've made someone ELSE feel bad, and waiters are an easy target. Personally, I believe in having respect for anyone I happen to encounter during my day, no matter who they are.
Good question.

I am very patient with waiter's and i tip them good. I have never been one and do not want their job. I think people are rude because they see their self as above these people. On the other hand some waiter's are not worth a damn. This is no reason to be rude, Just don't tip them.

There are a lot of people who have never been in the service industry and don't know how difficult it can be to serve the public and there are a lot of people who only think of themselves. That's basically your answer. Personally, I am not rude to waiters or drive through employees, partly because I have done that sort of work and partly because I try to take into consideration that if they are having a bad day and I'm nice then it might turn things around for them.

Some people feel superior to those "serving" them. Waiters, maids, teachers (they think just because "I pay your salary") that gives them a right to threat them so poorly. So they order them around. Some people get a power trip out of things like that. A sense of "power" over them.
Anyone see the movie "Waiting"? There are about 20 reasons in there NOT to be rude to those handling your food.

Most people who are rude to waiters are rude to anyone they perceive to be subordinate to them. It could be the person taking an airline reservation, cutting their hair or a secretary. I suspect they were bullies as kids and this is their only method of getting people to do what they want -- aggressive and rude.

Some people are just rude to everyone, and some think they're better than the wait staff. They need to be knocked off their high horses. I try to treat others with respect and kindness at all times, even when I am having a bad day.

Having worked in various customer service roles, this happens alot. Even the mousiest, normally quiet types can turn into horrendously rude people when it comes to service personnel. I think people feel that when they are spending their money, that they have a right to become bossy or more vocal then they would normally.
Also, its very easy to pick on people who aren't in a position to bite back....
And while I agree that you should get the service you pay for, there is never any excuse for such behaviour.

I am never rude to my server. But if they are not a good server I do not leave a tip. I always say please and thank you when ever they ask me if I want anything. I have had to go and get my own refills and silver ware before on many occasions. There have been a few times that I actually called the manager after I have eaten and told him/her about my bad experience. If I have a good server I tip very well.

People are judgemental. They don't respect others. They probably
wouldn't accept a job as a waiter, so they tend to look down on
those who are waiters.
People are so insensitive.
