Not all grandmothers are annoying and cranky. My grandchildren would give up about anything to come to my house but that just me. My grandmother is an angel even my kids and grand kids love to visit. Now my mom is a whole other story and we all have avoided her throughout life. (she may be kin to your grandmother lol)
Some older people forget they were once young and ignorant and they get frustrated with youthful ignorance. See they been there done that and heard about it around a million times and altho it may be the most significant point in "your" life at the moment she knows it just a stepping stone to your growing into the person you will become. Sometimes we forget that at that moment it is the most significant thing to you as young people and perhaps are short as if it is not important. In the big life picture it may not be but it is to their loved one so it should be important to them.
Also in some cases children today have been brought up in a instant gratification lifestyle. Many are rude, self-centered and disrespectful. No matter "who" is sharing those peoples company it is hard to enjoy. All people need to understand sociably if people don't enjoy the company they keep they won't continue to keep it. Family or not.
There is also the chance that Gramps was/is a cranky, selfish, self-centered ignorant pompous, pretentious, ***** and will be that till the day she dies. Or she may have an illness such as senility.

Because young people CAN BE inconsiderate,
- annoying,
- rude,
- bad mannered,
- ignorant,
- insensitive,
- arrogant,
- obtuse,
- self-centred,
- noisy,
- ungrateful,
- illiterate,
- stupid,
- and void of social graces and or awareness of them.
There, is that enough to be going on with! ....as to why grandmothers can be so 'cranky.' They in turn might be annoying as they are trying to establish some sort of 'control' in their space and in their lives ...which they generally can't walk away from, whereas, the younger people can.
Try thinking from the angle of another ...once in a while.

she may be annoying to you but she's not cranky remember your two generations removed and she is seeing life in a totally different aspect to you and you could be annoying her just appreciate her while she's here it only happens once in a lifetime go and give her a big hug its so much nicer than be at each others throat... GO ON THEN DONT STOP THINKING ABOUT IT

Perhaps the grandmother you're describing has always been annoying and cranky! Or perhaps she's not feeling well and isn't aging gracefully. Or maybe her family doesn't treasure her and treat her with respect. Or it could be that she's trying to control people and they resent her meddling. Or perhaps her family is trying to control her and she resents it. Has anyone in your family asked her why she's upset, why she's unhappy, what she needs that she isn't getting from her family? How you can help her?
