I noticed I get more thumbs down if I'm the first person to answer - like other people answering want to discredit my answer so voters will look at theirs or something.
Personally I think if someone gives a thumbs up or thumbs down they should be made to explain why - and more than just "didn't like the answer" or "answer is wrong".
Hey... who gave me a thumbs down on my answer here??? come on... own up... explain why... lol

You seem to be correct. It seems as though people who don't like the answer they read give a thumbs down as a punishment for disagreeing with them. I only give thumbs down if (1) their answer is little more than a personal attack on the asker of the question, and (2) if the answerer is a bigot or in some other way demonstrates an intolerance to dissenting viewpoints.

I never give thumbs down for the simple reason that everyone is entitled to their own opinion. I do however give thumbs up to what I may consider to be a good question or answer.

Maybe it is that they don't like that particular person or because they disagree with the persons belief's. Personally I haven't given any thumbs down but I have given a few thumbs up when I agree with them.

I thumbs down an answer that is not reasoned, "like all ---- are stupid and ignorant." In general I will not thumbs down a reasoned answer unless the reasoning is spurious or the facts are in error.
I also thumbs down answers in the Mathematics forum. I thumbs down any wrong answers I see (and I see a lot).

I thumbs down answers that do nothing but rehash another source. For example, "Why is being gay wrong?" "Because the Bible says so!" will get a thumbs down from me. There's no thought to it. It's not an answer. Why does the Bible say so? Because God said? Okay, then if God, the creator of right and wrong, said so, he made it wrong ... why? Too many people don't bother answering the question, they just wave a book at the question and pretend they've answered it.

I only give a Thumbs Down when I don't like the Answer, or disagree with it. Some Posters who I have given a Thumbs Down to in one Post, I have given a Thumbs Up to in the next Post, cuz I liked their Answer.

I guess people give the thumbs up according to what they feel is a truthful answer. The thumbs down if they disagree. Isn't that what it's for?

It depends. I will only give a thumbs down if I think the answer, or the question, is hateful. Though I do try to stay out of such questions, I'm not always successful. I've given thumbs down to Christian answers too. Hateful is hateful.

I only give a thumbs down when I know for a fact they gave a wrong answer and I can prove it. Or they just typed "i don't know" as an answer or 15 minutes or more worth of bible verses to read.
I think in this section so many of the Christians give the Atheist and other "non-believers" a thumbs down cause they think we are wrong. Others do the same thing to them.
They totally miss the point of the thumbs up and down ratings. Cause you are not suppose to give them just cause you disagree with the persons belief your are suppose to give them for correct answers and wrong answers.
