a pant of black smoke at start up-up is innocuous. consistent black smoke says you have a limited air stream, or maybe an injector no longer atomizing correct, or it is over fueling. ***White smoke potential low compression and blue smoke is burning oil for the earnings of others who spoke back with incorrect diagnosis. working some seconds after shutdown, no longer a concern, it takes a sec or 2 for the gas close off solenoid to provide up the gas pass. If it fails to provide up the gas pass it quite is a concern. you may the two close off the gas or air to provide up the engine. interior the old days the two cycle Detroit Diesels used an "emergency provide up" flap to close off the air pass while shutting off the gas pass replaced into ineffective by way of a caught injector or binding rack, then the engine turns right into a "run away". Loosening a gas clear out or crimping the gas furnish line can accomplish an analogous issues. often times a diesel would start up and run backwards, springing up a concern of its very own- and a mad sprint for the go out door by the unexperienced and each so often the experienced yet slicing off the return line back stops that. each and every so often oil is picked up interior the air stream and turns into anotehr gas source. Ether or gas fumes may additionally reason a concern if picked up interior the air stream. yet those are actually not concerns of this question, basically remembrances of an old mechanic.

Ages to start - glow plugs inneffective. Check fuse, wiring, plugs.
Black smoke on startup, your heavy foot pumping fuel into the cylinder while cranking. Unburnt fuel collects and when it does fire, there isn't enough air to ensure complete combustion. An excess of fuel in combustion gives black smoke. Excess air gives white smoke. Burning oil gives bluey-grey smoke.
Black smoke can also be caused by dirty fuel injectors, have these cleaned by a garage.

I have been told that 'oil-burners' need to be ran more often than petrol engines , that's what they are designed for. Try an injection cleaner. You put it into your fuel tank , make sure you have at least half a full tank though. Halfords sell it , ask the shop assistant for help.

turbo on the way out? is there a loss in power. my pug was a bad starter, turned out to be air getting in the fuel filter and the diesel running back into the tank.

If its petrol it's just flooding, probably caused by a faulty injection system. if its diesel the compressors almost had it, which means taking it to the scrap yard.
