Hiccough is a reflex spasms of the diaphragm accompanied by a rapid closure of the glottis producing an audible sound. The sudden rush of air into the lungs causes the glottis to close, creating the "hic" thus hiccough. Why hiccoughs occur remain unclear to scientists.

hiccup

spasmodic contraction of the diaphragm (the muscular partition separating the chest cavity from the abdominal cavity) which causes a sudden intake of breath that is involuntarily cut off by closure of the glottis (the opening between the vocal cords), thus producing a characteristic sound. Hiccups arise from various causes, most commonly overdistention of the stomach. Gastric irritation, nerve spasms, and various metabolic disturbances may also cause hiccups.

There r numerous causes of hiccup ranging from normal to serious one. Chest and abdomen are separated from each other by diaphragm which also helps in respiration. Any thing that causes irritation of this structure causes hiccup. most of time it is not cause of worry but hiccup of prolonged time and recurrent hiccup should be investigated for its cause. Some imp pathological causes of Hiccup are
Liver cirrhosis & jaundice( due to raised bile salts in blood)
Splenic Rupture
Subdiaphamatic hematoma
pleural effussion
diabetes
Lung cancer
liver cancer
stomach cancer

If you eat too fast, you can swallow air along with your food and end up with a case of the hiccups.
Any other practices that might irritate the diaphragm such as eating too much (especially fatty foods) or drinking too much (drunk people hiccup) can make you prone to having hiccups.
In these instances, your stomach, which sits on top of the diaphragm, is distended or stretched. Because they occur in relation to eating and drinking, hiccups are sometimes thought to be a reflex to protect you from choking.
