I got my four wisdom teeth removed by surgery on September 29th,2006, which means that it has now been 11 days since. I did great the first few days, so I thought that I was recovering pretty quick. However, as of like this past weekend, or three or four days ago, I have been feeling like a throbbing pain in my bottom left gum. I looked in the mirror yesterday and see that I can kind of see a little bit of the teeth still there. Yesterday night it was really hurting, or I should say, uncomfortable, and even this morning, which means that I had to take my pain pills.I have my "post surgery checkup appointment" tommorrow, but, in the meantime, what do you think it could be? I know that it really can take up to 4-8 weeks for full recovery, however, why did I not experience any pain like this the days afer surgery and now two weeks later I am? Any suggestions would be appreciated.

You really should call the oral surgeon today.

You could have either an infection or a dry socket. There shouldn't be that much pain 11 days post-op.

Hey I my bottom wisdom teeth removed by surgery the same day, I did good the first days too then I started feeling this sharp pain that almost made me cry. I had this bad taste in my mouth and my tongue is still half numb. I had to go to an emergency appointment yesterday and they checked it out and my dentist said that I am healing very slowly but that everything is ok no infection or dry sockets. I'm still feeling pain but I'm taking my antibiotics and pain killers just to go through the day. Maybe we didn't feel nothing the first days cause the area was still asleep. I guess some people take longer to heal than others. Good Luck!!!

Pain: Surgical operations in the highly sensitive oral cavity can be expected to produce some postoperative pain. If a prescription has been given, take the medication only as needed for pain. Occasionally, severe pain will develop in the jaw, face, or ear, from 2 days to 2 weeks following surgery. The pain is sometimes accompanied by bad taste in the mouth. In most cases, this indicates that the blood clot in the tooth socket has decomposed, exposing the bony walls of the socket. Return for treatment of this socket to control the pain and aid healing.

Sharp Bony Projections: During the healing process, small, sharp fragments of bone may loosen and work up through the gum. These are not roots and often work out themselves. Return for their simple removal if they are bothersome.

Hope this helps! Good luck!

Could be "dry socket" which would definitely cause the throbbing. You might contact the oral surgeon today to discuss.
Or if you were given written post-op instructions, see what is says to do about that.

As for the bits of teeth, sometimes pieces of the roots break off and are left in. They usually eventually just work their way up and out through the gums. Too bad they did not warn you about this.

You could have a slight infection, that will need to be taken care of with some antibiotics. Also with the bits of teeth coming out, I was told that in order to get the wisdom teeth out, quite often the surgeon ends up crushing the tooth, therefore it is likely that some small bits can get left behind. That is probably why you are seeing the bits left over. Good news is that they are coming out.

Hope you feel better soon!

I had mine out in Hospital and also split the stitches on the lower gums. I did not have any coughing, but my head was pounding! If you think it is a cold, call the Doctor. I did not have any swelling, as I took one small arnica tab one hour before surgery, however bruises I had plenty. Best of Luck
