The kittens are about 4 weeks old. We had them in a big box with towls in a back room, but momma kept moving them to another part of the room, so now they are wandering all over the place. The problem is THEY STINK!!!! I cant seem to do anything about the smell and it is causing my house to smell bad. I am also pregnant and I am very sensitive to the cat odor and its making me sick. I have never had kittens in the home before so is it common for them to smell so bad? How do you get the smell out? I CANT STAND IT!!!! As horrible as this may sound, but im thinking about taking them all to the pound because I cant deal with it anymore, and I dont want to do that so im desprete. We change the litter box, I keep mopping back there, but nothing seems to work. Now it smells like pine sole and smelly cat. Someone please tell me how to get rid of the smell????!!!!!!

The kittens are only four weeks old, so they are too young to leave.

If they are only 4 weeks old, they still should be confined - they'll have trouble finding the litterbox! If necessary, place the box in the bathroom (even in a dry tub), so that it will be easy to clean. If they're wandering around heavens knows what they are using for a litter box.

No, they shouldn't stink, and you're probably extra sensitive to it in your condition. You can wipe them with a warm washcloth or buy pet wipes (even baby wipes) to make them smell fresher.

Nature's Miracle is a good cleaner/deodorizer (Pinesol could be harmful to your cat & kittens, as could anything with phenol in it). My very favorite deodorizer for cats is Odoban.

Please take pity on these little lives, and don't take them to the pound. Don't let them become some of those 10 MILLION cats & dogs that are euthanized every year. Give them a few more weeks & they'll be able to go to good homes.

Put up signs & place an ad NOW so that when they are old enough to go to new homes, they will have a loving environment.

And for your own sake, wear rubber gloves when handling, at least while you're pregnant.

Finally PLEASE spay the Momma! Then you won't have to deal with this again!

It is NOT common for kittens to smell bad. Perhaps that is why the mother kept moving them around because she too has been distressed over the smell. Cats are usually clean animals as long as their environment is clean.

Make sure you have cleaned out all the mess from after she gave birth to them because I know that really stinks. Fresh towels and box..........perhaps more than 1 litter box now that you have a few kitties running around. Once they reach 6-8 weeks if they are good size and eating dry food good you can find good homes for them.

I believe Pine Sol is deadly to animals...check the label........and if it has Amonia in it it can sometimes cause a cat to pee on the floor since they think that smell is a trace of urine.......

First of all, I hope you aren't changing the litter box. I remember being told by my doctor when I was pregnant that expectant mother's should never change the litter box. (Something about toxoplasmosis microbes found in cat waste being dangerous to the baby).
For the smell, you could try arm & hammer's litter box deodorizer powder. It works quite well. Make sure someone changes the litter and adds new powder once a week. In two weeks, why don't you put a sign outside your house that says "Free Kittens".I bet people would take those kitties in no time!

The problem with Pinesole is that while it may disinfect the area, it will do nothing about the smell (not to mention it can be harmful to animals).

My suggestion is to try cleaning the room with "Kids 'n Pets" stain remover (visit http://www.kidsnpetsbrand.com/ for product info). One of my cats was accidently locked in our bedroom by our maintenance guy while on a trip a couple months back. Unfortunately, the cat ended up doing her business on my bed because she had nowhere else to go. This stuff not only got rid of the stains, but also completely neutralized the smell (and saved me from having to buy a new mattress!).

try putting baking soda in the litter box. If the kittens smell, it means that the mother is not cleaning them as she should. No it is not common for kittens to smell, the litter box, yes, but not the kittens. If the smell is in the carpet, you can sprinkle baking soda on the carpet and then vacuum it thoroughly.

if these are from a stray, mom or pop, take them to the pound, there are things a pregnant woman can get from them, ask your doctor about handling the soiled kitty litter, someone will give the kittens a good home...............Don't take the risk, Pound and then off to see your doctor....may take a while for the smell to leave, it get into the walls the floor and anything porous

Not much you can do just please don't let them out and about. I have some neighbourhood kittens who just love tearing the paintwork on my car to shreads and urinating on the soft top which means I get that kitty stink without even the benfit of having cute pets.
