You need to call some gyms. Many of them have facilities for boxing. You need a good set of gloves, you can find them at athletic and gear stores. You could buy your own bag as well and just do it at home. This is what I do. I box and I love it for many reasons. You may also buy other supplies to help you train harder if your really serious about it. Boxing is very physical and anything to keep endurance up is good for training like running, weight training and diet. You are going to love it!

The first thing you want to do is find out where a Boxing gym is near you or one that you wouldn't have a problem getting to. You can type in Boxing Gyms in your area on your computer or check in your local phone book. Stay away from Health Clubs (World Gym, Golds Gym and Ballys) that offer boxing training, usually these people who hold the sessions watched a video or attended a seminar on boxing and think that they are Boxing Trainers, there's so much more to it than that.
Once you find a gym get yourself in a little bit of shape before you actually go to the Boxing Gym, trust me here, if you think that your already in shape, you're not in boxing shape. Start running, you can't go wrong with running it will help with your cardio and your endurance of which both are needed for boxing. Don't try to start throwing punches on your own or hitting any bags, you don't want to develop any bad habits.
After you've been running for a while (A month or so)
go to Ringside.com and get yourself a good pair of cotton wraps, this will be just about the only thing that you will need just starting out most gym have bag gloves and all your other basic needs. Don't just buy Bag Gloves for the sake of having them, you might find that Boxing isn't for you and that would be a waste of money.
When you go to the Boxing Gym ask around about a Trainer, it's not like it was a few years back when a lot of Trainers wouldn't work with female fighters today often times you'll usually find a couple of girls in the gym, watch their Trainers how they work with them and see if you get a good vibe off of them and if you do, go up and ask "Will you Train me?" a lot of gyms especially the smaller ones as soon as you join you will be under the instruction of the person who runs the gym.
Once you have your Trainer make sure you listen to everything they tell you to do. He/She will point you in the right direction as far as purchasing Bag Gloves, Shoes, Mouthpiece and Sparring Gloves and anything else he/she feels you need.
Good Luck!

Of course, a broken nose and fat lip won't bother you? Or a shot to your breast, or an uppercut in the pit of your tummy, right?
You'll run 5-10 miles at 5a.m. go to work or school, take care of family responsibilities, and spar 6 rounds frequently. And watch what you eat. Getting smacked in the face, well, you will learn to like leather, right? Are you sure you want this? Check the yellow pages, call the local police league, YMCA. You'll find a place.

Go for it. Talk to as many people involved in the sport as possible to learn all you can about how to get started, what to expect, etc. Avoid people with negative advice as you are sure to incounter them. I love boxing and enjoy watching talented women boxers show their skill in the ring. Any major book store will have books on getting starting in boxing. The internet will surely serve up some good advice also. Do some research on your own first so you don't go in completly green.

I am 30 and I am also looking to start boxing. I looked around and the local YMCA by me has boxing classes. Maybe you start with that and then progress to one on one. Have fun. Kick @ss

I don't know about boxing, but I would call up your local YWCA/YMCA or any type of community center, and maybe you'll get a lead from someone there. You could also put a free ad online at craigslist.com to try to find like-minded people. Good luck.

Call around and visit some gyms. I have the utmost respect for boxers because their training is so intense. They really have to be in awesome shape to endure fights.

Boxers must have superb conditioning in many ways. Cardio is important to be able keep going without running out of gas. Upper body strength for muscling people and punching power. Lower body strength for power. Abdominal strength for bobbing and weaving, and to be able to absorb blows to the stomach, etc.

You could work on some things (conditioning-wise) at home with little equipment. Stuff like jumping rope, running, push-ups, pull-ups, sit-ups, and leg lifts.

As for equipment such as heavy bags, speed bags, medicine balls, etc, you really should work with a knowledgeable trainer to learn how to use them. They can teach you how to properly punch, wrap your hands, and other things to prevent injuries.

Good Luck to you
