You are right. Using rat poison suits the structure and accessibility of your attic. Usually rats dont die instantly. They go out looking for water and at that time if any cat attacks and kills it (the rat will be kinda drowzy and staggering) the risk of unintended poisioning to the cats is a possibility. Suppose you clean the attic a little and let your cats find them. I know it doesnt fully eliminate your problem. The only way I can think of is to keep your cats away for a few days (in a friend's or relative's house ) while you clean up the attic using rat poison and bring them back when the process is compelted?

Yes, rat poison is poisonous to cats and dogs, too. IF your cat catches a mouse that has ingested poison, your cat could get very sick.
You need to find any holes where the mice can get in or out and plug them all up. The ones that are trapped will (unfortunately for them) die of starvation eventually. But then no new ones can get in. Call an exterminator for other options of catching or trapping mice that won't harm your cats.

I would phone a vet and ask them that. You don't want to take chances of making your cat ill. If you lay out the rat poison, put it in the attic where the cats cant get at it as they are so damn curious they may lick it. Have you thought of hiring an exterminator?

If your cat eats one of the mice that has the posion in its system it will be tranfered over to your cat in the digestive tract. Which would be a high vet bill. Could even kill your cat! Just because the cats can't get to them doesnt mean the mice cant come to them.
Becareful!!

If your cat eats some of the poison you will need to take her/him to the vet immediatley for a vitamin k shot. As far as the mice, they manufacture glue traps.

Put traps out where the cat can't get hurt. If he eats a poisoned or dead mouse he'll get poisoned too.

yeah, the cat could die from eating a poisoned rodent. If you must kill them, use the snap traps or the box traps.
