In most states you will need to find an existing insurance company to hire and sponser you. Once you have a job in the industry you can take the test for your license.
I would suggest you contact the Insurance Commissioner in your state for more information.

What state, each state is different, but most require a minimum in class training and for you to complete an exam. The classroom part can cost between $300-500 for each test (property and casualty-covers home, auto, business..ect) and life (may also include some annuities and limited investment products). Figure on another $50-75 for each test.
You dont need a company to appoint you to get the license, however to sell products you will..your best bet is to get the license if you are wanting to break into the field first..there are companies who will pay for your training, but you will have a tougher go of it than if you paid for it yourself (espc life insurance co's, there are literally hundreds hiring agents daily..but its a tough field cold selling life insurance).

I've worked in an insurance agency since 1980 as a secretary. Some years ago, one of our companies sponsored me and I took some courses, took the state test and got my life/health license. Then a few years ago I decided to get my prop/casualty lic & again I took courses, took the state test and am licensed. For my prop/casualty lic I have to have a number of continuing education each year. There are companies out there who provide courses to obtain insurance licenses.

The first thing to do is to check the web site for the insurance commissioner in your state for guidelines. You do not necessarily have to be sponsored by a business to obtain your insurance licenses. There are community colleges and business schools that offer the pre-licensing courses.Generally you have to take a state exam also.

Look at your local tech schools. They usually have some course that you can take prior to taking your exams. You will need a sponsoring company
