My cat has a growth that is continuously getting larger, she is in no pain but I cannot afford the costs of a vet and want to put her down myself, humanely and with out shooting her.

Life can be sad at times. This is very hard to say. There have been times I had to put an animal down and because of the circumstances and suffering time was of the essence and obtaining a Vet would have prolonged suffering and the animal may have been dead by the time the Vet got there.
I really can not tell you a Humane way other than a shot to the back of the head. I know to most people that does not sound Humane. It very hard to do also, some many find it easy, I do not!
Now, you say the cat shows no signs of pain. This may be serious and it may be just a Cyst or something non-evasive. I would have to see the Cat to know. If, the cat is not in pain I would not be able to "put her down". First, call some Vets, maybe an older more established Vet. He may have more compassion. Tell him your situation and ask if he could just look and maybe tell you something and advise you on what to do!!! It is very important you talk and listen. Maybe he will give it a look for free. It worth calling around. Country Vets may be better than a city slicker wanting money to pay high Rent. What I have seen many times on a growth like this, is, it may be just an infection, maybe a tick buried under the skin. If, you can have someone help hold the cat, comfort her and cut away the hair around that area with small scissors and then shave the area gently. Do this before going to a Vet also, this way the less he do and see your concern he may be willing to help. Now with the area shaved look and feel. Is it a hard or soft growth? You can tell this to a vet over the phone also. I wanted to tell you how this can be done yourself, but, doubt you would, so Vet may have to help.
OK, with all that said and no other options and not shooting the cat. Go by some "Starting Fluid" at an Auto-Parts store. It is Ether. Spray it on a rag or what ever and hold it close/over the cats nose/mouth. You will need to keep spraying the rag and need a well vented area so you not pass out. Eventually the cat will go to sleep. Then keep doing this for 5-10 minutes until she no longer breath or you see a pulse, if possible.

If she is not in pain then why do you want to kill her? Let her live out her final days at home with you where she is happiest.

mernieinc,
That is a horrible idea. So she should just drop off her cat, that way the cat will probably feel abandoned and will die a slow pain full death of something like starvation... unless she is lucky enough to get hit by a car which would be quick at least. No this is not the right thing to do. I may make it easier on you but what about the cat? Does the cat not have feelings? What a way to go for a beloved pet.

There are a few vetrinary places that'll do operations for relatively cheap. The only hard part is to find a good one, that will do the surgery and not screw up. Goto cat rescue/adoption centers and they can often point you in the right direction. For example, a cat rescue/adomption center that I know of (probably only near where I live) is MEOW cat rescue.

But, if she's not in pain and the growth isn't giving her discomfort, don't put her down. :( Let her live happily with you!

Sorry to hear about your situation. I don't recommend putting her down yourself. Call your local humane society. I had to put down my cat since she had cancer and was in pain- the vet just gave her a needle and she went quietly. That is the best way.

I am a cat lover personally. I have been through alot of cats. There is no HUMANe way to put a cat down. Yeah it is easier on us if we give our animals a shot that way they die with no pain. My cats that has died on me, I have taken good care of and made them comfortable as possible in their home and when they got to the point of no return we put them outside and just let nature takes it course, with in 5 hours after putting them outside they have gone to a better place, so to speak.

PLEASE contact your humane society to do the job, if you must.

If she is not in pain, I wouldn't put her down anyway. Only when her quality of life has diminished so much that it is kinder.

Do NOT put her out to be alone and frightened to die. That is *incredibly* INHUMANE!!!! Some of the other suggestions aren't much better.

Only a vet can put her to sleep kindly... If you can't find one to do that for you reasonably inexpensively, please, please contact your Humane Society to help.

There is no way to euthanize your cat at home. You need to contact a vet
