any one or a combo of these things. . .
sunflower seeds (raw unsalted)
carob chips (sparingly)
yogurt chips (ditto)
pretzel sticks or mini pretzel twists
Corn, Wheat, and/or Rice Chex
Quaker Corn Bran cereal
popcorn (unsalted/unbuttered)
veggie chips/sticks (can usually find these in produce/specialty section of most grocery stores)
dried pineapple
mini p-nut butter or cheese cracker sandwiches (like Ritz bits but use sparingly)
Go for the contrast of slightly salty w/the pretzels and the sweetness of the cherries & cheerios, & add a bit of zing with the dried pineapple, these'll all mix into a nice flavor with the nuts.

Add some fun! Stauffer's makes Mini Animal Crackers, and they're low in sugar and fat. They're each about the size of a Cheerio, so they're great for trail mixes!
If you have a Dollar Tree, you should be able to get them there, or buy them online at
http://www.stauffers.net/product.asp?product%5Fid=129&dept%5Fid=8
The kids (of all ages) love them!
