I can only feel shame from something that I've personally caused, either to myself or someone else. So no, I do not feel ashamed of my ancestor. I don't even really regret that my ancestors had to endure slavery. However, it would have been nice if, immediately after slavery, they had developed a plan to mass market whatever knowledge or skill they'd learned as a slave to begin building an empire. Do you know how much old money I could be sitting on right now??

I am exceedingly proud of my ancestors, they came to the New World in 1702 they were merchants from Germany, looking to increase their holdings. They were pioneers in a hostile world. They persevered thur many hardships but they prospered and their business grew into a small empire. They did nothing wrong for me to be ashamed of.They killed no Indians, had no slaves, did not deal in slavery ,were in fact outspoken adversaries of slavery. No you are very wrong I am very very proud of my ancestors. No one today can take credit for anything their ancestors did,and by that same token,no one can share any blame, shame or misbehavior by them.I am my own person, nothing that was done long long ago has a bearing on the type of person I am today. The "guilt" trip BS doesn't work on me.Its just a fallacy anyway. And it doesn't work on normal people.Any one that can feel shame or disgrace over something that happened hundreds of years ago is not a very well adjusted person. One can feel concern for injustices but not personal guilt.

("the germans have been a pretty barbaric race even before the war")...I find this generalization of my heritage to be very offensive......but then all your generalizations are offensive and were meant to be.You made this question a race related one and now you say it isn't...yeah right.......You are the biggest racists here.
There's nothing worse than the real racists that thinks he isn't one at all...You are actually very sad..

My country had absolutely no part in the barbaric settling of America in the 1500's forward. I am of Norwegian descent, and will not take blame for what the British, Spaniards, French, Portugese, French, Germans, etc. did. If anything, we gave this country a much needed boost.

No, I am not ashamed of my ancestors. This country was built on their backs. If anything I'm proud that they had the integrity to hold up under the social, racial, religious, and gender burdens that were placed on them. What do we have to be ashamed of them for. We as a people need to come together and leave the past behind us and look forward to our future, we ought to be ashamed of the living, not the dead.

I am not ashamed of my ancestors. None of my ancestors have *ever* owned slaves or tried to enslave others, although they have been slaves in ancient history. My ethnic group has a history of fighting to help the underdogs.

In any case the past is the past. Get over it, and focus on what can be changed.... the future.

My ancestors didn't slaughter any natives, actually. Not every single family had people engaged in that activity, you know. Are you ashamed of your ancestors? Every country has 'bad' things in its past. There is no exception. However, if you personally didn't do it, it isn't your fault. Move on.

Katsuluv, they didn't call us 'Vandals' for nothing, you know! But so what? We whipped the Roman Empire, anyhow....

I agree.....When Colombus came, he broke so many treaty with the natives, for the sake of religion and progress....He deceived and lied to get his claim on those lands, oh but that wasnt considered illegal right? I am glad that there are a few Americans who are willing to see the truth for what it is, instead of living in denial.....Somehow, back then, it was OK to do this to the natives....
