Just walking around NYC with my eyes wide open when I was young was my favorite thing to do. I could walk from 110th Street to Battery Park. There's always great free things going on in the parks like Central and Washington. Going in those great NYC stores even if you couldn't buy was a treat. Don't forget the museums although they're a bit shoddy by European standards.

Personally I like to explore Chinatown/Canal Street, Lower Eastside, Little Italy, West Village, and the Upper Westside.

You're about to have the best years of your adulthood. As always, be careful.

1. I used to love just going for long walks. I lived in Carroll Gardens, Brooklyn and on the weekend I'd sometimes walk up to the Brooklyn Bridge, walk into Manhattan and only then get on the subway. The view is so beautiful and I loved just people watching.

2. Movies!!!! Especially Film Forum...

3. Smaller or unusual museums -- like, I love the National Museum of the American Indian, which is in lower Manhattan in this really beautiful building...

4. I didn't have much money but I love to shop, so I regularly dropped by the Housing Works Thrift Store to make sure they didn't have some upscale gently-used thing that I simply must have..

Go on a scavenger hunt to find the best local pizza shop. Make sure you are hungry. When I want to try new things, I do a search on-line and print out a list, then I go!
