Officers and senior enlisted personnel do very well. The younger guys--for what they do--it's hardly enough. Also consider the fact they move every so often, and it's hard for the spouse to maintain a good job, or education for that matter.
So the younger guys sometime rely on one income which isn't enough, or they pull second jobs delivering pizza or being a bouncer. The spouses will babysit other dependent kids or work at the local Wal Mart just to make ends meet.
But like I said, someone who's been in a while live comfortably.

I dont know what all of yall are talking about. We make plenty to live off of, its just how you manage it. When I first got married it was me, my wife, 2 step kids, and 1 on the way. That was when I was an E3 and I never had a problem with bills. Now that I am an NCO I got all sorts of extra money to put towards savings, TSP, vacations, and everything else. Its all how you manage your money. If you are going on a spending spree every payday then of course its going to seem like we dont get paid a lot.

lol my husband is only a PFC (private first class) he should of been a Specialist from last may 2005. but they messed up his paper work. just now he is going to get it. sometime hopefully this month. he is going to re enlist for another 4 years for a $10,000 bonus which is not alot. he does not make enough to pay bills, pay for food and ect. the money is crapy and the army sucks. we hate it here in germany we hate the army also.
they need to pay u like u are a famous person i think. its not worth the money they give u so u can die.

After 10 years of service I make $132,482 bucks a year.
Here is my monthly breakdown.
$5482.20 per month in basic pay.
$187.49 for allowance for sustenance.
$3750.34 for rental allowance.
$670.21 for utility allowance.
$950 for save pay (involuntarily extended on tour)
Compared to the house I came up in, with often unemployed parents and food stamps, I feel like I am very well off.

depends on rank, years in service, and where they are stationed. it hardly covers a soilder and his family. a second income is needed. as for privates who live in the barracks, they pay no room and board, but the pay still sucks.
but believe me it aint much to risk your life for the freedom of all these liberal f**ks who oppose their president and his proactive solutions.
