The only way that burn muscle is by not eating properly, and keeping your body sufficiently fueled.

otherwise your body will use your muscle tissue as the energy it needs.

if you're worried about the soreness in your muscles after your pushups, then you should only do them every other day.

The muscle tissue tears and breaks down and rebuilds itself after a day or so, so by doing sets and different variations like wide (more than shoulder width), diamond pushups, and knuckle pushups will work more of the muscle groups.

Eating the right foods (no junk food, whatsoever), like fish, chicken, turkey, whole wheat bread, fruits and vegetables, and at least 3 servings of dairy a day will help, and don't forget drinking plenty of water (at least 8 glasses a day, another 3 glasses or more for exercising), hydraton is also a key factor in recovery; you'll rebuild the tissue faster.

Ahh, the comments are killing me. Push ups will build endurance and some strength. You can train endurance daily. If you are looking to increase strength you need to stress your muscles out with weight. Then you need to take 1-2 days off to let your muscles heal. You will need protein and such to repair the muscle...I'm going to stop there.
By the way, you will not become strong as an ox by doing push-ups daily... if that were true power lifters would do them instead of their work out.
Your best bet is to vary your workouts from day to day then change the pattern to shock your muscles so to speak.
Peace.

You won't burn the muscle if you do them everyday. And you will get strong as an ox. However you won't see the growth and the rip you may be looking for. You'd have to do almost 200-500 a day to get size and rip doing pushups. However, pushups are fantastic for increasing upperbody strength. If you want growth, go get weights twice a week. If you want to naturally strong - do pushups everyday.

You need sufficient carbohydrates and glucose to give you energy for push ups. Too little energy and your body will start to use protein from your muscles for energy, and very quickly.

You should have a layer of fat at least.
