Nail biting is a common habit and one that's not easy to kick. However, following these steps may help you manage it and possibly quit altogether.

Steps
Purchase a bitter-tasting formula made expressly to stop nail biting. Choose the worst-tasting solution you can find.

Wash hands every morning with soap and water and towel dry.
Apply a liberal amount of the solution to the nails, cuticles and surrounding skin.

Continue to reapply the solution throughout the day as it wears off.
Reapply the solution at bedtime. Make sure the bitter taste is always present on your nails.

Tips & Warnings
As nails begin to grow, coat them with a polish made for strengthening nails.
Get regular manicures to maintain nails.
Consider keeping gum or hard candy around for when you need a quick "oral fix."

Nail biting becomes habitual as an unconscious action keyed to stress. You need to take it out of the unconscious and put it into the conscious. You can't easily control what you don't stop to think about. Choose a mental image of an alarm (a clock, a whistle, a fire alarm, etc) that works best for you. Every time you raise your hand to your mouth try to trigger that image in your mind. Focus on it. Discipline your mind to do it. Little by little that alarm image will start to go off. And when it does, you can lower your hand and find a better way to cope with stress.

It is an unsightly habit that if not broken when young won't be broken easily. You may have to see a hypnotist or therapist to stop. All the wives tales recipes won't stop the unconscious reaction to bite your nails. If your nails are long enough to attach fake nails to them you could try that. You won't be able to bite them and knowing that you paid $35 will remind you not to bite

I had the same problem. I started keeping my nails trimmed down to where there wasn't enough to chew on. I still like 'em short, but once you've broken the habit, you can go back to growing them out if that's your deal.

There is a special nail varnish available. (If your a guy, don't worry, it's clear).
It is designed to give a bad taste which will put you off biting them
