It is outscored in reviews by every other model, and gets worse gas mileage than a Hummer, has bad highway handling, brick-like aerodynamics, loud exhaust note, and huge blind spots. Before you buy consider the Hummer H3, any Jeep, and Chevy Tahoe. There much more refined, capable, and comfortable vehicles, the Hummer/Jeep for an off-roader and the Chevy for street driving. Never go for a Ford, they have the worst reliability.
PS. GM engines are built by Honda and other Japanese companies, and they work with Toyota, Nissan, DaimlerChrysler etc.

I have the FJ, Sun Fusion LOADED model with the 6speed manual transmission.
I LOVE LOVE LOVE this vehicle! It is FUN to drive, it is zippy and it sure gets a lot of attention where ever I go. The ONLY thing is the blind spot, but all cars have blind spots and you learn to adjust. The FJ is a friggin' tank. I love it, I live on a long dirt road and have a 32 mile commute to work, a commute that is all back roads and in the country, so I KNOW I'll be in a safe vehicle this winter.
I suggest taking it for a test drive as it is NOT for everyone. I fell in love with this from the second I saw it. I am VERY pleased with this and all the guys at work ( I work with about 40 guys) are envious! It's NOT just for guys!
Toyota has a GREAT site explaining how the FJ works and what it will do. I highly reccomend checking it out.
Oh yeah, one more thing, it is more fun than I ever dreamed of. I can't WAIT to take it off road. It's a rugged, good looking fun vehicle. And I've never had a manual tranny as smooth as this, it's easy to shift and fun. It doesn't want to be babied and you need to be a bit aggressive with it. The all time 4x4 is amazing as it "sticks" to the road.

Ignore the previous comment, Hummer H3's are have horrible handling and are severely underpowered (V5 engine taken from the Chevy Colorado truck). In fact the H3 Scored dead last in a Car & Driver comparison test between the FJ Cruiser, Jeep Grand Cherokee, and Nissan Xterra.
As far as reliabuilty, the FJ uses the same 4.0 liter V6 found in the new 4Runner and Tacoma. I have an 03 4Runner with about 35k miles on it and it runs great. No problems whatsoever, the only times it sees the dealer is for routine oil changes.
BTW if you live in Southern California buy your FJ from Claremont Toyota. They have one of the widest selections of FJ's, plus they will give you LIFETIME FREE oil changes when you buy your car. I think the cruise promotion is still around, they gave me a Royal Carribean cruise voucher when I bought my 4Runner in 03 and when I bought a Camry in 05.

-IGNOR THE FORD COMMENT--.Its not like they are going to last like the FJ. it is based off the landcruiser Prado. i have personally taken one off-road the new features like down hill assist and the hill hold function are great. the looks are very retro and the interior is very spacious. i havnt had one problem with it. I even lifted it with larger tires and it rocks. i know a great sales person if you want. "and its not me"
