i can help u with only question no.1. .. . . That statement in true... Lower caste ppl can't marry with upper caste ppl... It is very common in India... The only way for the couple to get married is to elope. But if anyone were to find out, you can be stoned for it.. You will be despised and sometimes treated worse than a beggar.... In some modern countries, tis is slowly diminishing but there are some elders who still practises this concept.. My guess, these are the people who deserved to be stoned! (",)
Suresh > This is wat i was told by my frenz in india.. Informativ or not, that i can't tell.. I m juz giving my opinions.... Anyway the law in India is so corrupted that no one really give a damn abt it.... True that the law does not forbid it but wat abt the ppl there? Do they uphold the law and justice there? I am speaking based on a fren's experience while she was there... Sometimes it's really sad that this is happening but it's the fact.. Caste is still a major issue in India.

answer to question 1.
Yes, its true that high caste people can't marry low caste. This is mainly in the small towns and villages where people are under educated and do not have an open mind. They stick to their tradition and what they were tough by their previous generations. In india family reputation is very important, so if one member of your family marries a low caste person, then prople will lose respect and future arrange marriage with that families will be difficult...
In major cities, people can usually get together if they love each other, but if that is against their paren't wish, they they will be disowned and will not get proper respect from the family...
hope this helps, can't answer the second question. sorry

Denial by a Hindu friend shall not work. Let it be honestly stated that the code of Manu Smirti prevails in Hindu Society, whereby, one is confined to the Caste one was born into. There are four castes. The lowest named 'Shudar, Dalit, or Achoot' are also held untouchables. They are denied entry into the Temples of Deities-of-the-Upper Castes. Few enlightened Hindus may not agree with ManuSmirti but the vast majority does. It is said that Cow-meat is permitted in Vedas, the most ancient sacred Texts, but disallowed in Shastras, the later day edicts of Hindu Faith.

Syakira is highly uninformed! The law in India does not forbid marriages between people from any caste provided the girl is 18 and the boy 21. Who people choose to marry is their own choice. People tend to marry within their economic status which is prevelant in all societies.
Cow slaughter is banned and noone is allowed to practise it and if it is happening is done illegaly. And we don't want to legalise it either! What are you going to do about it?

I'm not 100% sure but I think the first statement is only true in the village areas now and doesn't apply much to the city people. But I think most of the rich, high class or royals still think this way, but thats not just in India thats all over the world.
