I can tell you that both habits are very hard to break and until your friends are ready to give them up, there is not much advise (good or otherwise) that will convince them to give up their addictions. I do not know much in the area of drinking, but I can tell you first hand that giving up the addiction of smoking is very hard. I was a smoker for 26 yrs before I decided to give it up. I knew the health problems that smoking would cause and the long term affects if would have on my body, but I still decided to smoke. 8 months ago, the coughing that smoking causes became to much for me and I quit. (coughing was gone in 3 days) I did not do it cold turkey tho, I used Nicorette gum and it worked wonders. Infact, my husband and I both quit using Nicorette. I am sure your friends are aware of the health issues that drinking and smoking can cause and will have to decide for themselves if the risks are worth it.

Wanting to quit has a lot to do with it. Smoking and drinking, a bad habit, like most habits.

well it would be very hard to quit unless youre friends truly want to quit. and even thin it will be very hard. and trying to quit both at the same time would be virtually impossible.

try to go to AA meeting, they will help
but, all you can do is ask them nicely to go with you. But don't ask them to quit. They must choose to do that themselves.
