I have an 03 4Runner with the V6 engine. It's got about 35k miles on it and runs great. No problems with it whatsever. The EPA suggests that my car gets 18 mpg city and 23 highway. I actually average 19.4 (it's what the trip computer says).
The V8 ones are great too. The only con is you will probably average only 16 or 17 mpg. Otherwise the V8 has been proven and is highly reliable. It's the same engine used in the Toyota Tundra and Seqouia. It's also the same engine found in the Lexus GX470 and LX470.
If you don't mind the gas mileage, 4Runners are great cars.
If you do decide to buy, I'll let you in on a secret that most owners don't know about their 4Runner. It's actually got an autostart feature. Before starting the car, turn the key so that the battery is on. Then just twist the key once so that the is engine starting and then let go. You never need to hold the key, the engine will start by itself.

4 Runners are good trucks you should get over 300,000 miles out of it. There a V6 so the gas isn't the greatest but it's better then a V8. Buy it.
