Then when we speed up it goes back up to what we had it set at. is it a problem with the battery or something, or is it something we can't fix?

The car has an automatic volume control (AVC) It can be disabled. See your owners manual.
At higher speeds the radio will automatically compensate for road and wind noise and increase the radio volume

i have a 2004, and a 2000 chevy impala i have the same problem i looked in to it and the delar told me this
It's built into the radio. As you speed up, the road noise, wind noise, etc. increase. The radio has sensors that automatically turn the volume up to overcome the noise. When you slow down, the noise decreases and the radio turns down the volume

LOL THIS IS A GOOD PLACE TO LAUGHT SOMETIMES

SPARKY IS RIGHT
that is a feature you can turn on off by using the switch next to the volume control on most radios it increases the volume when the car is moving faster because of the noise

it never bother me it is always on in my wife car and works great when i lower the windows

so nothing is wrong with the radio or battery

This is an issue you can do nothing about if you still have the factory stereo ,GM did this in cars so that when you get a lot of wind noise with the windows down at higher speeds the radio is louder and when you slow down less noise means less volume. Alot of motorcycles have this feature. If you already have an after market stereo and it still does it, take it to the dealership to get it checked for wiring problems.

You have speed sensitive volume, you can disable the feature through your radio, OR set the radio volume where you want it when you are stopped or at a low speed, it will then increase to a higher volume as you speed up to compensate for road noise etc. It should be covered in your car manual.

"This is an issue you can do nothing about" is a load of crap!!!

I have an '05 Impala and this is a feature you can turn on/off at the radio. I actually like it, but that's my taste.

Don't listen to those who say this is a problem.

Sounds like a O.E.M. radio. Check the manual or Chevy dealer on how to turn off the auto sound increase feature.
