My fiancé and I are on a very tight budget for our wedding. We are looking at having a student, who is the step-daughter of a friend, take the pictures. By the time our wedding arrives, she will have 1.5 years completed of a two year program. What would be a fair offer to her?

First you should pay for all the supplies (ie film), developing, portfolios and the like at her cost when she pays for them. Some you will pay in advance (film if she's not shooting digital) and others you will pay for after the wedding.

Now she's not a professional, nor will she even be considered one until she's really got a good portfolio under her belt, especially for weddings! She should be considering this as great experience in building her portfolio, and looking at this job as an apprentice. So nice of you to let her try out her skills on your wedding. She not only has to be a good photographer, but a good photographer is also a good organizer, and communicator.

So she is spending her time, to help you out, and otherwise you would be paying big bucks for this service. What do you pay her? Depends on where you live...I'm in the midwest, and any college student doing what they love would probably be very happy making $15.00 to $20.00 an hour, tax free, building their portfolio

I would say right around 400-500 for an 8 hour stint. That would cover pretty much everything, and that is being generous for a student. I would see if prior to your wedding she can come up with a portfolio of sorts for you, even if it is just of everyday things so you can make sure it is a good idea.

We are too on a restricted budget and have checked into student photographers at the local college. I have one student who is willing to do a "per picture" fee, and it would be up to me to choose what pics i want. Flat rate or per pic prices vary, so see what would work best in your situation. I wouldnt pay $400 for 50 pictures, so think closely about that.

Congratulations!

I think in the $200 range too. I am having a photojournalist friend do mine and she was going to do it for free, but I am giving her $500. Have you seen any of her work? Not all photographers have talent and I would look over her work before you officially hire her. You are doing a favor to her too because she is going to be gaining this experience and will probably want to use the photos she takes at your wedding in her portfolio.

I would pay for the pics and developing charges, and give her like 75-100$ an hour-but that depends on the area, fully trained photographers with lots of experience get 150-200$ per hour where I live, so you may wanna use that scale! good luck and congrats!

First of all you should pay for all of her supplies, film, paper etc. ask to see her receipts.

Then you should give her a gift for her time about $200.

Lastly, if she did a good job, you should write up a very nice recommendation for her to keep in her file to show future prospective clients.
