I have this vision that in the not so distant future there will be a virus that wipes out vast numbers of computers. The technology that fly planes, satellites, almost everything from home PC's to multi-national servers will crash in one foul swoop.
The four horseman of the Apocalypse will come in the guise of a unknown threat to the structure of western society, simply because we've become far to independent on the micro-chip.
Technology isn't fail-safe by any means or in fallible of such that we can ever take it all for granted.

We have become very dependent on technology today. We certainly do take it for granted, especially when we rely on Microsoft to support about 80% of this technology with its very unstable software. Almost all viruses, spyware, hacks, etc, are made for Windows. What if one day it all came crashing down? Well, all of us using a UNIX variant will be getting faster Internet access through Apache run servers.

I can give you three examples from the the bottom to the top of business.
1.If a power fails in a store, most cashiers cannot manually count and make change to a customer from a cash drawer, without the register computing it for them. This has happened. My last knowledge was in Dallas, TX.

2.if a computer failure occurs in a bank, the interest loss per day is astronomical.
I witnessed that.

3.If a computer failure occurs in a manufacturing or distributing company, it is shut down. No orders can be processed. Inventory records can be lost and credit accounts can be lost.

I have seen this happen Retail customers had to be contacted to verify any outstanding payables. A physical inventory had to be taken.
Can you say "Nightmare"?

I'm sure that today, at this moment, there are more stringent backups in place. Those like us, I'm sure, have lost lots of data. I have, and had to rebuild many files for personal use.

Remember those old black and white movies in offices where an executive would go into this large room with 40 or more people sitting at desk with typewriters or calculators?
That was a real representation.
Computers do today what scores of people used to do in a day.
Our interstate, national and global communications wouldn't be possible without our technology.
How convienient is it to use your microwave?
How many diseases, sydromes and genetic defects can be fixed, identified and lessened because of electronic diagnostic tools.
Vehicles are safer because of sensors and engineering applications, ABS and traction control.
People are living longer because of medicines developed with the aid of advanced technological devices.

We could live without all the technology, but I wouldn't want to live in that world.

We have become SLAVES to the technology which make our lives easier, but there is another downside to all this. With something a simple as a power outage, business activity is crippled. You can do your banking, shopping, or anything else, because practically everything is computerized. I believe that if we have to go back to the lifesyle of the late 1800's, we as a nation couldn't survive.

any civilisation is 2 meals away from revelution anyway. but if we had to do without technology, ANY technology we would be up **** creek without an outboard motor!!

our food would have to be grown and hunted, we would have to use horses etc but everyone would fight over the remaining supplies.

not many people could even survive if this happened because they cant even kill a spider or eat raw fish or any things that would help with survival

very!. If all technology suddenly dissapeared, we probably wouldnt survive now.
However, technology is a good thing for health care, it has saved loads of lives. Think about how many ppl would have died without technology.
