Poor circulation. I suggest that you might want to consult a doctor. Diabetes. High (bad) cholesterol. Early signs of Carpel Tunnel Syndrome. And a host of other causes that a medical doctor can ascertain by way of blood tests and other simple methods.
This can be a symptom of several things that is best diagnosed by a professional, licensed medical doctor... not some unknown behind a monitor who may be a simple plumber or truck driver or high school kid with nothing better to do.
See your doctor and stop putting it off; it's only for your own good that I suggest this, not because I wish to frighten you. Allowing this to continue without treatment can only make matters worse for you; what if it's neuropathy and it (nerve damage) only gets worse by not taking care of it now? The sooner you take care of it, the easier it will be to correct the problem, right? Good luck and take care.

It's called neuromuscular impingement. This is the pressure applied to a nerve by the surrounding (usually) tendons. It is part of a group of injuries called RSI (repetitive Strain Injuries) It first cropped up from kids playing on their Gameboy type games (lots of thumb movement) then "Blackberry Thumb" and now with text messaging. The cure is simple but hard. To heal a RSI you must (1) stop doing what is causing the injury ( ie: text messaging) and (2) give it time to heal PLUS you will never be able to do what it is to the degree you had been doing it. not so many texts/so much time on gaming

sounds like problems with the nerve endings in your thumbs. most common cause of this is carpal tunnel syndrome
Carpal tunnel syndrome is a condition in which the median nerve is compressed as it passes through the carpal tunnel in the wrist, a narrow confined space. Since the median nerve provides sensory and motor functions to the thumb and three middle fingers, many symptoms may result.
The following are the most common symptoms for carpal tunnel syndrome However, each individual may experience symptoms differently. Symptoms may include:
difficulty making a fist
difficulty gripping objects with the hand(s)
pain and/or numbness in the hand(s)
"pins and needles" feeling in the fingers
swollen feeling in the fingers
burning or tingling in the fingers, especially the thumb and the index and middle fingers
The symptoms of carpal tunnel syndrome may resemble other conditions such as tendonitis, bursitis, or rheumatoid arthritis. Always consult your physician for a diagnosis.
Treatment may include:
splinting of the hand (to help prevent wrist movement and decrease the compression of the nerves inside the tunnel)
oral or injected (into the carpal tunnel space) anti-inflammatory medications (to reduce the swelling)
surgery (to relieve compression on the nerves in the carpal tunnel)
changing position of a computer keyboard, or other ergonomic changes
make an appt with your doctor to have this checked out-it becomes more painful and numbness can occur if left untreated

By keeping the legs/hands/fingers or any other part of the body folded in a particular position for a long time, the nerves get foldeed and pressed. this causes the prickling sensation we call pins and needles. this can also happen when the limbs are very tired. ps i hate it when it happens.

How is your cholestrol? If it's high, get seen soon.
Also have you been put on any new medications lately? This can be a common side effect to many meds. Let your doctor know.

You apparently have some neural condition which would feel like your digit had been asleep and is waking up.. Should there be any discoloration of the skin, may want to have it checked for Renaud's disease. Common symptoms for that condition.
