Avi files will play just fine in Quicktime.

or is it an unusual codec like xvid or something?

Try VLC, a video playback program for Mac that plays everything. Although as previous posters have said, Quicktime should be fine.

You can get various codecs from www.3ivx.com and a great file converter from http://homepage.mac.com/major4/

Standard avi files should play in quicktime or mplayerX
