I am not sure but I don't think they break the fast. God never overburdens a soul. Everything is about intention, if you have the right intention then everything is set straight. You intend to use this obviously for medical reasons. If Islam exempts sick people from fasting, then it should not come as a surprise that using an ointment to heal a swelling would break your fast.

Know that fasting encourages you to be sincere with your ownself and practice self restraint. If you are sincere then God is The Forgiving, The Merciful. That in no way should become an excuse for doing wrong things, again what matters is sincerity with the right intention.

Note that it is my personal opinion, and I am not a scholar.

and Allah Knows Best,

I am sorry to here this brother. I pray that Allah ta'ala gives your mother and the family strength and patience. It can be overpowering to see a loved one suffer and not being able to do anything about it. When you feel like make a dua for her. I want you to know that the Prophet Muhammad (peace and blessings of Allah upon him) said, "How wondrous is the state of the believer, all of his affair contains good." So whether we are feeling pain or sadness we are in a good condition and this cannot be bad. When a Muslims is feeling loss then it can be one of three reasons; 1. Removal of previous sins 2. Punishment 3. A raising in that persons rank Either way Muslims are don't lose in any condition my prayers are with you. If you need help then email me anytime.

Only if you are going to eat the cream. Applying cream on your body does not break your fast.

No, i dont think so.
Creams dont enter the blood stream.
water also diffuses into the skin but that doesnt mean you cant wash.
I could be wrong so check the website mentioned in the first answer to be sure.
