Possibly because although there are plenty of semi-literates in the west, the overall education system is rather better than elsewhere so more people have abandoned organised religion. This results in panic manoeuvres from the ranks of the superstitious. The illiterate religious mass believe (as they're instructed) that it is their duty to force other people to accept whatever irrational ideas they've been brought up with. The semi-literates see a chance for profit if they can force a primitive belief system on the western masses. In addition, many of the religiously obsessed masses like nothing more than using extreme violence no the basis of "we'll kill you in order to save your soul"

Needless to say, the worst possible group in all of this are the press - publishing and exaggerating all the events as they happen and, in some cases, probably "creating" the news in the first place. Their only reason - profit.

I haven't noticed this tendency myself but I agree with other answers that religion is, in itself, an evil thing overall. How many wars or pogroms have been instigated by atheists? Religions claim to be persecuted, but the most persecuted group in all of Western history has been atheists! People used to be murdered (by the lovely forgiving Christians) for denying the existence of a god, and countless thousands have been killed because they were so-called "witches" - usually wise old ladies who practised herbal healing, or just people that some nasty bastard took a dislike to and denounced. Who killed these elderly ladies? Priests and practitioners of the Catholic church. Right now, think of a war, any war...almost every single war since the beginning of time has had a religious aspect to it! Northern Ireland and the troubles there, Bosnia, Croatia, Afghanistan, Iraq. The Pope blessed the troops that went off to fight (for the Nazis) in WW2. (Thanks mate.) End the world's problems by recognising that we are all human beings, we are all here for a very brief time only and there is nothing else after we die, so we ought to band together to make this life the very best it can be for everyone. NOT fight a huge war and kill men, women and children over whether we prefer Mohammed or Jesus. Madness. Please guys, think about it.

It is not the religion that is making the headlines with negative goings on, it is the not so religious person who does the crime who is bent and twisted, and not acting in the way of God, this is why religion today can not be totally trusted as they only preach what they want you to hear and to some extent all religions are defying God when they say that they are the one and only true religion, there is not one true Religion, they are all religions in there own right and believe in God in there own way, but some factions are corrupt. I believe in God and that is my religion, I trust in my own faith.

Because newspapers have nothing better to do than write whatever they can that will causer a sensation over religious issues. Did you ever wonder why they don't report on all the charitable works that are done by organized religions? They don't honor anyone for dedicating their life to God and to service to his people. No missionary work, no free clinics, no sisters of charity... not in any secular newspaper.

Religion is attempting to take over political power anywhere it can. They think nothing of using the coercive power of the state to shove their god down everyone's throat. It seems that a little bit of Religion is like a little bit of syphilis, unless eradicated, it always gets worse.

have you noticed in the West that generally it is almost always the bad news that makes headlines. when dog bites man there is no news but when man bites dog this is news. most people will read about disaster, doom and despair quicker than they will about good news.

They get the press they deserve based on their actions, like covering up the sexual abuse of children to protect their image. If the image of the church is more important than the welfare of innocent children then you deserve bad press for that, and you expose yourself to be a basically evil organization.
