Does anyone else think that after you have past a certain?

you should take a test every couple of years to check that you are still compitent to drive, i'm mainly asking this question because I have seen countless old people driving obviously slowly because they are not physically capable, this would eman to me that they can not react quickly if something were to happen in the road ahead

another thought, how about good driver points ie, if you get pulled over by the police and your car is fine and you the driver are doing nothing wrong, you get + points

I agree with bostonianinmo that there should be testing every 5 years or so from when people get their licenses in the first place. I've seen young drivers do as many stupid things as old drivers. Also, I believe that after a certain age people should have to pass a physical to prove they are still able to drive. Nothing personal against the elderly, but behavioral issues can be fixed through instruction and sometimes penalties, where health issues (like vision and reaction time) are not as easily dealt with. The bottom line is that driving is a privilege, not a right, and too many people have forgotten that.

I think people need to get their heads out of their Ares no matter the age. They need to remember others are out there and you don't know who is in the car with them ie baby. And turn signals? why don't people use these things no matter what way they are turning. We are all not mind readers.
I always feel that I am dodging old people, teenagers, and the I am running late and don't give a crap about anyone else out on this road. Oh and of course the drunk ones those are my favorite NOT!!!!
I think everyone should have to take a test every 5 years and I think it should be an unplanned test with a camera in the car the driver not even knowing so we can see the "real driver"

In order of priority, I would eliminate the following drivers with immediate effect:-

1) Drunk drivers

2) Drivers driving under the influence of drugs or medication

3) Drivers with defective eyesight

4) Most taxi drivers

5) Most women drivers

6) Very old drivers who clearly cannot aim, let alone steer.

i agree that all people should be test every five years
lets put into perspective that the most deaths on the roads are coursed by young drivers 60,000 people die on roads each year more than the wars .
may be just may be its because you driver to fast that's why they seem slow
PS 60,000 men women and children THINK
of wich 3,200+ a year are in the uk which they say is low who needs a war when weve got the car

IMHO, every driver should be given an written and on-the-road test every 5 years. Period. Poor driving habits tend to accumulate over time and are not limited to elderly drivers.

Nah, going to the DMV is bad as it is, I don't need to waste my day going there say every 5, 10, or 15 years. There are still some old people who can drive as well as if they were still young. Not everyone's skill at driving degenerates at the same rate. If anything, the person himself or herself should be obligated to make the decision themself to not drive, as well as their family members, who should be morally obligated to do so.

Absolutely, I wonder if my sight would let me down, and I am coming up for retirement, the thought of being without a car is horrific. But you are right! Not sure how they will do it?

I know a man who was driving with Alzheimer's quite bad, as his wife could not drive, she would direct him, he did not know his way or why he was, but clearly this skill stayed with him - heaven knows what speed he travelled at!!!

I believe that as people get older, their driving skills go downhill (no pun intended). But changing the laws requiring stricter testing for older drivers is political suicide. The majority of registered voters are older people.

I have seen countless elderly people who can NOT see over the steering wheel, and a lot of them are incapable of reversing.

There have also been lots of news reports of people driving the wrong way down motorways and ALL of them have been elderly.

Yes i agree in spain you have to have medicals and your licence is not valid to you die but only if your able mentally and physically to drive after 50 you must every 2 yrs have a medical its a good idea
