Onions are bad for dogs because they contain the toxic ingredient Thiosulfate which causes haemolytic anaemia, where the pet’s red blood cells burst while circulating in its body.

At first, pets affected by onion poisoning show gastroenteritis with vomiting and diarrhoea. They will show no interest in food and will be dull and weak. The red pigment from the burst blood cells appears in an affected animal’s urine and it becomes breathless. The breathlessness occurs because the red blood cells that carry oxygen through the body are reduced in number.

It seems that garlic poses the same threat to dogs, although the dog would have to consume an incredibly large quantity, which would account for why so many dog owners have successfully fed their pets garlic in an effort to curb fleas with no illness resulting.

On the contrary onions are bad because the can cause flatulence in dogs. But garlic is OK in moderation. I use a vitamin supplement for all my dogs that has brewers yeast and garlic. Just as garlic is beneficial to humans for a healthy immune system so it is for dogs. Just make sure that the garlic is given as a supplement and is vet approved.

Onions cause Heinz Body Anemia it causes the red blood cells in the body to rupture and die off to fast. Since the red cells carry oxygen to the tissues it causes huge problems.
It can be fatal.
Garlic is related to oinion and it could casue the same problem but the animal would need to ingest huge amounts of it.
So you see many products with garilc in them for pets. Most dogs never have any problems with it.

I have a dog cookie recipe with garlic in it and all the dogs that have eaten them LOVE them. Stick with their normal food, I wouldn't just put a garlic bulb in their bowl but it can't hurt them in small bits. Large amounts can be dangerous.
