As a criminal justice student graduating in 6 months I have to say I think policing is a very tough job. There are so many laws to follow by officers themselves. SO many people whine and complain ohhh they didn't help me when .... someone broke into my apartment 2 times.... well my advice to you would be to move or to get better security.
Some of you are right police show up after the crime, and do their best to solve it. Police officers have numerous jobs and expectations and they cannot meet everyone's demands. There will always be people whining of injustice, but I don't see a long line of people out there waiting in line to be hired by law enforcement agencies. WHY?
Because most people can not handle the daily stress, anxiety and fear. Deal with it, Police do as much as they can.
Bad seeds yes indeed there are some, as there are in EVERY profession!

Of course. I think we have the best police force in the world. It is a pity they have to do so much paperwork. A system should be conceived whereby they have to do less paperwork to allow them more time on the beat. I feel sorry for the police. If they catch some criminal he or she is often let off or given a sentence not reflective of the crime. You must also bear in mind that day in and day out they place their lives at risk endeavouring to keep us safe.

THIS IS FOR "TALL DUDE"

They rely on the public to advs them of any problems and they attend as quickly as possible. Saying no to the question is wrong. They are not mind readers, can't be everywhere at once, they do their job well and deal with situations that i would assume you have never dealt with.

If they were mind readers, there would be no crime anywhere because they would be there before the criminal commits the crime
So just think before you talk

No - They are under trained. The police in my town show up and show up quickly when called. But once they arrive they are useless. We live in a beautiful beach community but there are issues with drug dealers on my street. All the police ever say is "Yeah we know they are dealers-but we just can't catch them". My blind grandmother could catch these guys. They are the most obvious drug dealers and they know the police aren't going to do anything. They've been dealing drugs for over 10 years and the police still haven't caught them. But the police don't realize that you have to watch them to catch them.

I think that some people have unrealistic views of what they believe a police officer should do in his job. They are human and there is a lot of red tape that comes with the job and frankly, I doubt they look forward to throwing themselves in front of bullets as the highlight of thier day, but to answer your question yes, I think they do their jobs. I think when it comes down to taking action on serious crimes, what they do is very heroic indeed and that is when we see them at their best and appreciate the danger of the job they have elected to do.

There will always be bad apples in the lot of course, as is true with any profession, but for the most part yes, I think they do their best. Believe me, with the type of society the police have to deal with, one should not be so quick to judge by what they see on the surface.

Not really. I think there's so much crime in the world that the law enforcement concentrates on the worse cases, leaving minor cases to be ignored. Example - my apartment was ripped off twice back in December 2002, an investigator was supposed to pay me a visit, which never came. Summer of 2004, the radio was stolen out of my car, the dashboard was completely torn apart, and I was told nothing could be done. I was also a victim of scam, in which I lost a considerable amount of money, and was told I may never see it again.

Many do. Many do what is expected, some do more.
Some are corrupt, like any other public sector occupation. But even to just meet requirements, they risk their lives, and without that society would collapse.

Most do, but you got some who are so lazy and lackadaisical, they can care less, the job is just a paycheck at the end of the week.
