The Church of England are seriously considering dropping St George because Muslims are offended by his flag.

The English have forgiven the IRA for the bombings 20 years ago, we have forgiven the Germans and the Japanese for the war 60 years ago. Is it too much to ask for Muslims to get over a war that happened 800 years ago?

There must be a time limit on guilt. Are German babies going to be guilty for what their grandparents did to the Jews, are white European children guilty of black slavery?

More interestingly, will the Jews expect to be forgiven for children they have killed in Palestine, will the Arabs ever take a share of the blame for the black slave trade, and will we ever see a black man working in a Chinese or Indian restaurant?

It's time racism moved on from the 1970's. It's not just a white problem.

Dear Heather, The question here is really not about forgiveness or being forgiven, is it? It is totally about the tension between the two factions. It is expressed in your question, and it may be expressed in my answer too.

Ofcourse we all know, everybody has their own justifications for everything. We all know the "crap" that is happeneing in Iraq, Afganistan and Palestine right now.

History always has and always will write a story, which favours the stongest side during conflicts in an era, but what happens to history if the conflicting forces are more or less of the same strength?!?!? That is what we are seeing here. When we commit mistakes we never tend to realise it, until it is too late..

Slave trade, holocaust and racism never seemed bad to the ones who were doing it, until it was too late, are we doing the same here in understanding each other??? Think about it, why do we utter a thousand times, "The ends won't meet", but not even thinking about a quarter of that time "Why it won't meet". Never think right or wrong by our actions today, step back and think of it's long term effects.....

somewhat some the Crusaders tremendously the knights templar fought with the Saint George bypass on their shield sir coats and banners. edit to Melkha the interest Crucifixtion comes from the Latin words Cruci figere or Facere the interest for a pole or stake became dwindled- this is the place the worde impale comes from as properly as why a fence produced from wodden stakes is spoke of as a palisde. Cruci ability a bypass so the interest in the minds of a Roman meant a bypass in any different case they'd have spoke of because it palifiction.

I am a Muslim and although I am not familiar with the Cross of St George story, you make perfect sense to me. Does it have to do with the Crusades? Why are muslims offended by it? I hope you can give me some insight. But any way, we need to let go of the past and move on. Why don't we think of ways to make our lives better, easier, more peaceful and successful instead of holding grudges and making whole generations pay for some past mistakes?
Allah is peace and forgiveness.

I must say I agree. I am tired of apologizing for something I DIDN"T DO. I didn't take part in the Crusades, I didn't own slaves, I didn't massacre the Native Americans.
No member of my family ever owned slaves - for heavens sake, my mothers family came over during the potato famine and my fathers were from Romania.
They never took part in any masacre - as a matter of fact, one of my great uncles had a contract on his life because he testified AGAINST some men who massacred an entire village.

OK - I am done venting

Because for them it is a symbol of the Crusaders. But I think we need to stop this pussyfooting around. It is one thing to offer freedom of religion - quite another to yield the freedoms and secular society our forbears suffered to create. Western society certainly has plenty to apologise for in the past and the present, but it seems to me that multiculturism is bringing us to lose confidence in our secular society, its processes (thanks to the pollies), values, and mores. We must stand our ground, and try to do better. Those who don't like it can go home. This is mine!

I'm sick of it too. If Muslims don't like our way of life they shouldn't be living here and I'm sick of them trying to turn the UK into a Muslim country too. I want Natwest to have their piggy banks back (it offends Muslims), I don't want to have to be told to take christmas lights down (they offend Muslims), I don't want to bump into a Mosque here there and everywhere when housing should be being built for ENGLISH people.
