Houmous is a very nutritious food, containing a large amount of protein, dietary fibre, mono-unsaturated fat, vitamins and iron.

However, some recipes can have a fairly hefty calorie content, so be careful about what you put in it (or what anyone else puts in it if you buy it.)

Israeli / Palestinian version doesn't use oil and is healthier but a bit grainier. Greek version does and it's the one you're more likely to find in a supermarket or deli.

Source of vegetable protein, tastes great but depends on what oil is used and how much.

There are so-called "healthy" versions of hoummous available but I don't rate them. They tend to contain less oil but I would go for something either made by someone who loves Hoummous, or a good brand that is made using olive oil. The extra fat is mono-unsaturated and therefore positively beneficial, and it tastes so much better that the extra calories are worth it. Serve it with mixed raw veggies instead of crusty bread to make calorie savings, if that's you concern, and it tastes great in a sandwich made with rustic bread and grated carrot. Lots of fibre!

Very, and tasty, make your own, that way you can make sure it's all health, nothing artificial.

I spotted that some of the shop bought stuff (particularly the low fat stuff) has flavouring enhancers etc.. in.

Just whizz up some cooked chickpeas (tinned is usually in salted water so wash them first if using), add a clove or 2 of garlic, juice of a lemon, pinch of cayenne pepper, good teaspoon of cumin, or as much as you like, blob or 2 of Tahini and some olive oil. You can add some water if you want to keep it light, whizz in blender till consistency you like, I like it more like a chickpea mash than the very smooth stuff you usually buy.

I think it has a reputation for being healthy but beware, it can be pretty high in calories and fat - especially if it's made with loads of olive oil, best bet is to make your own, it's so easy if you have a food processor

It is healthy but is made with a lot of oil (generally ie if it is to taste any good) and is therefore high in calories-so everything in moderation!

If you mean the 'Chick pea' type, as opposed to compost (Humous) - I would say it is healthy - more so if you make it yourself so that you know what goes in it.

High in carbs and calories, but basically healthy as chick peas.

Do you mean compost? it is healthy for plants, but not good to eat.
If you mean humous, which is a chick pea puree, it's very healthy, as it contains lots of protein and is nice to dip celery and carrot sticks.

I hope you mix your own, it's not difficult and you know what has gone into it.
