Hi Charlotte......consider using Nature's Miracle (available worldwide at any pet store). It's an enzymatic neutralizer which lifts the urine odours by thoroughly soaking the affected area to let air dry. Repeated applications may be necessary depending on how heavily soiled the area is.
Here's a photo to help you recognize the product on the store shelves: http://www.petsmart.com/media/ps/images/products/detail/large/June05/lg_50648_47f09.jpg

The best product for this problem is called Nature's Miracle, you can purchase it at any pet supply center. Follow the directions on the bottle or use it in a carpet cleaner as per the directions. Once you have applied the product you may notice the odor stronger at times, this is normal, the product works enzymatically, so the smell may go up and down. It has been my experience that no other products work as well as this one. Good luck.

Midnight is right!
I used to have that problem with my cat! He almost always used to pee in a box and he began to occassionally pee elsewhere then he started to do it more and more... almost everytime.
...my husband and I were afraid we were going to have to get rid of him, wich would have been really difficult because hes a part of our family....
we heard about behavioral problems such as peeing all over the house when a cat isn't healthy so we took him in to the vet and sure enough he had a bladder problem.
Its common in cats... especially males. they have a bone that portrudes near thier weewee and it can cause crystals to form and back up causing him to have problems with urination so i guess when he REALLY has to go... and he actually CAN go... wherever that me be... he goes!
We felt awful that we didnt catch it earlier but almost as soon as we did things got better... it took a few days to a week... the vet will perscribe a special food or pill...
If your cat spends a lot of time scratching in the litter box, he probably has a problem with urinary crystals and he just cant go when he feels he needs to... if thats the case get him treated!!
he will feel so much better!!!
( so will you!)
hope that helps a little :)
also you would probably want to get a product that breaks down the cat pee... the specialty prducts like the miracle one listed above or any of them that come from the pet store should work...
... in my experience cat pee doesnt clean up very well with soap and water... remoistening it with water could just make it smell more and spread it around. its some pretty strong stuff, you really have to break apart its chemical composition. i saw a commercial for something called Urgone that was supposed to do that... but any product specifically for pet urine should... just make sure you dont get something that simply covers the odor.

My vet and some of the owner's at the vet recommended XO by Don Aslett. I tried it on my rug after cleaning the pee with some Fantastic and it worked perfectly. I get mine cheaper at www.qvc.com than at the vet. (yeah I know, it's home shopping but I get a lot more for a lot less)
No matter what you decide to do, make sure that the products you use are safe for your pets.
Good Luck!

Cat Urine Odor in Carpet: If necessary, use a black light to locate the stain. Use a 1:1 ratio of vinegar to water. Soak stain well, then blot with (recycled) paper towels or an old towel until all liquid is absorbed. Repeat if necessary.

There are a few products available at your local department store. The one that I recommend is Out! It is safe for carpets and very effective. Follow the directions closely, and you shouldn't have any problems.

You can buy or rent a steam cleaner and they have pet formulas. They also have citrus and lavender liquid scents that clean to put in the machine too. Make sure kitty is not sick with a bladder infection or anything because they usually pee in the box.

you can't. Tear it out along with the padding and let the floor air out for a few days before getting new carpet.
