i REALLY hurt her by taking away her favorite things -i`ve seen & my husband has learned that kids get immune to spankings, they get so used to it that it`s no big deal, unless you beat them half to death! talking-they`ll block you out.i give her 3 chances to shape up. i take away-computer, t.v. & me playing with her.x1 hr i add more time each add. strike-like baseball-strike 1 2 3 you`re out! works great! i really see no reason for my child to fear me- i`m supposed to teach her how to be a great person, which she is!

No, it's not common. I think it's a cultural thing and generational, too. I know caning is done in Sinapore. Hitting kids for discipline seems to have been more prevalent in previous generations. Nowadays, parents are more into more positive forms of discipline. Also, spanking children to discipline them may be justified but for some but others may consider that bordering on child abuse. A child psychologist suggests holding something up (such as a slipper) as a threat and then hit it hard on something such as a table. The loud sound should be effective enough for the child to tow the line for fear being hit without actually being hit.

If it's happened to you than you should know the answer to that question.I don't believe in beating a child no matter how hard they try to push it.Especially now days with teachers and people who believe any kind of discipline is abuse. One visible mark on a child can put you in jail or the child could be taken away, would you even chance that? You need to find something that works for you that doesn't involve any violence, like taking the favorite toy ,or t.v. privileges, etc. The way you were disciplined is not always the right way.

As I understand it caning is very vicious. If it is the kind of punishment they give in Singapor it causes vicious lacertations. This is not only inappropriate--it is a disgusting and hopefully illegal thing to do to a child.

I do believe in spanking. And I believe a spanking should be felt--I spank bare bottom with a paddle. But that is a far cry from caning.

Maybe in the 18th or 19th Century it was common. Today, in many parts of the world, beating a child with a cane or a switch is an illegal offense.

That is absolutely insane. I've given my son a spanking before, and I felt horrible afterward. Timeouts and reasoning DO work, as long as you're consistant... When I spanked my son it was because I was mad, not because he was bad like I tried to tell myself... And as soon as he looked at me with that horrified/hurt/'why in the world would you ever hurt me?" look on his face I realized spanking doesnt do anything but hurt your childs feelings.

caning is illegal in australia and smacking is just about illegal too. there are a couple of great books you might want to read about how to get your children to listen.

the first one is called "Children are from Heaven" it was written by John Gray

the other one is called "how to talk so kids will listen and listen so kids will talk" written by Adele Faber and Elaine Mazlish.

They're both great books and quite easy to buy on the internet.

Unless you have felt a cane on your backside I wouldn't recommend it. You ask if it really hurts why don't you tell me after its been used on you and your whimpering like a little school girl.

For G spoken like someone who has never had kids. Okay Now, I have never beaten my kids, nor have left them scarred for life because I have spanked them. I believe Children should have a good healthy fear of their parents.
