You should have taken it back to the shop. In Australia close to Xmas is the best time for water melon as its the season for it & it probably hasn't been in cold storage.
nice & red is a good way to pick a sweet one & if you buy a whole one the stem should be dead & when tapped you get a hollow type of sound & you can smell sweetness as well.that works most of the time but can't promise for sure

Ah-ha! You got the right gal here! I learned an old trick us Asians often use. Knock the watermelons with your fingers. Well, not actually knock, I think. What was that word again? When you choose your answer, tell me the word, will you? Well anyway, knocking is also fine. Then the LOUDER the sound, the better. And MAKE SURE it VIBRATES or SHAKES a bit to prove it has much water in it(juicy), and usually juicy ones have a sound like 'book'(full of water), not 'took'(dry), if you know what I mean. And tell you what, pineapples work the different way. That means the smaller the sound it makes, the better it is. But you'll have to be experienced anyhow. Sometimes it is quite difficult to know which one is better, especially when the whole bunch is bad! Haha...

Firstly, if you don't feel confident purchasing ripe or 'good' fruit there are two things you can do.
1. Ask someone at the supermarket who works in that section to help you. They might not know, but it's worth a try.
2. Purchase things like watermelons from somewhere like Tesco or ASDA who won't quibble if you return it for any reason. Both these supermarkets are happy to take back purchases with a receipt if you're unhappy for any reason. I don't know about other supermarkets.
As regards watermelons in particular, there's a trick I picked up from a man in California when I stopped at a fruit stall in the middle of nowhere in 1995;
He said if you flick a watermelon and it makes a thud sound, then it's ripe. If it makes a ping sound then it isn't ripe. Do this while holding it in your other hand so you can feel the vibration and you know it's not reflecting from other melons in the crate/shelf.
I hope that helps you find some tasty watermelons.
