Some Austrian royalty was assasinated in one of the former Jugoslavian states. Austria went to war over it.

Several countries (England and France among them) had a protection agreement with this state, so they all declared war to Austria. As Germany had a protection agreement with Austria, they declared war on the group England / France. As Germany put up a blockade around England the US was pissed off (their ships were sunk too), so they declared war on Germany.

For this kind of reasons it widened all the time and in the end it was one of the most brutal wars in history, where only one man should have been punished (the assasin)

The archduke of Austria, Franz Ferdinand, was killed by an assassin in Sarajevo. Austria came down into that area (then part of Serbia) with a military force. Russia was allied with Serbia, so they declared war on Austria. Germany was allied with Austria, so they declared war on Russia. England and France were allied with Russia, so they declared war on Germany.
