does anybody have any idea what this is?

Make sure the cooling fan is working and that the vents are not blocked. By letting it overheat you are shortening the life of the bulb. Look in the instruction manual for cleaning instructions.

It could be the lamp. Usually they have a lifetime of about 1000 to 3000 hours. It is also the only piece in the projector that can get warm. The second would be the power supply, but I doubt that is the problem. I suggest you take it to a service(if it stil has a warranty).

yes it probablly needs a good clesning,
clean the cooling fans really well.

fan or lamp clean all dust and filter would be step number one
