maybe you could escort her to the store and help her pick out her groceries...if you want, gather her plastic containers and cook some meals for her to have and freeze them so each day she could take one out and microwave them......if money is the issue there are many agencies around, churches that might assist with giving food to her...adult protective services might find someone who can assist with meal preparation or having a social worker help....

Does she live in a retirement community?
How do you know they are not feeding her properly?
I suggest you make some observations about how the staff (if any) treat her. Do they tend to her needs? Are they kind and understanding? Does she receive proper medication to keep her in good health?
Ask her questions too. Do you get respect from the staff? Do you feel comfortable? Do they feed you properly or enough? Do you get your medication?
Look for signs of mistreatment. Are they dirty, smell odd, look malnourished? Are they often alone, are belongings missing?
Be vigilant.

If she doesn't live in a retirement community, you may need to either give her some help with her nutritional needs or find someone who can.

You stated she is not being fed properly, not that she is not eating properly, leading me to believe that someone else is at least partially responsible for her care.

Whether or not someone else is supposed to be helping, you can always contact your local human services dept. They will be able to lead you to programs that may be helpful, such as meals on wheels or Senior Care Services. Believe me, they are much more interested in making is safe for people at home than removing them from their homes. My mother and father in law had people come to their house several times a week to help with housework and make sure all other needs were being met. There was no cost to them. The programs were introduced to us through the human services department because they wanted so bad to remain independent.

Well, I'm not sure if you should bring it up to her because people can be sensitive about this kind of issue but there are other ways you can help. You can offer to take her grocery shopping the next time you go over to see her bring her something like fruit or you can find some healthy recipes and suggest them to her.

Speak to your friend, but do it gently. If it's an issue of cooking, then see if there's a nutrition center, meals for the elderly, or some other service nearby.

It is VERY,VERY kind of you to be concerned for the health and well being of the elder.Sadly so many of them are "forgotten" in this world. In my town, we have a program called meals on wheels. This is a non profit organization with volunteers that deliver daily hot fresh meals to the disabled and elderly citizens in our community. Perhaps you could check with your local department of health and human services and have your friend set up for this service. You may even want to volunteer yourself. Many thanks for your concern, there are far to few of people like you in this world.

That is sad to know that we work most of our lives to strive for a few days of relaxation in our golden years, then end up getting sick anyway. What is the meaning of life?

Well, check on her.. then if you are unable to help her, call a Hospice agency around your area, they will help. They will provide adequate care.
