what if they dont get cleaned? how do you clean it? why should you? it gets dirty?

Yes ,clean them weekly. Use a damp sponge with a small amount of soap. Dry with a cloth.(Over night) This will remove any hair or product,allowing for a safer use.

I once read somewhere if you do need to clean hair straighteners - because straighteners do tend to get a residue on them after sometime - from the products what is used on the hair - like hairspray etc - it recommended nail varnish remover with cotton wool ---- obviously when they are cold. It's very good I've cleaned them that way a few times. Suppose it could depend on the type of straighteners you have got - mine are Kodo's ceramic

I don't clean mine but if you want to clean yours I suppose you could ither let it get hot and clean it's self like an oven or just get a damp wash cloth and wipe it down before you turn it on.

You do not have to unless you have filthy hair.
